Author and theologian H. A. Ironside said, “We would worry less if we praised more. Thanksgiving is the enemy of discontent and dissatisfaction.” When I read this quote, I was reminded of how we've been striving this year to be "Positive in the Present" here at SHHS, and I thought about the supportive praise we  see being heaped upon one another hear at our school between students, faculty, and staff. And as this is a season of thankfulness, we would be remiss if we did not thank you for all that you do in our community to make our school great. You, our PTA , School Community Council, and other parent support groups, are truly fighting discontent and dissatisfaction with your praise and support of our students, faculty, and staff. As administration, faculty, and staff of SHHS, we are truly thankful for your support.

We are proud to have these students represent our school.

SHHS Footloose Production: This week the school's production of Footloose came to a close, and our students did a fabulous job with the show. Under  the direction of Ms. Stubbs, the cast and crew delivered a captivating performance that appealed to our hearts and our funny bones as they brought the iconic 80's film back to life on the SHHS stage. Well done cast and crew of the show.

SHHS Girls' Basketball: The girls' basketball team tipped off the season with a dominant performance against Snow Canyon HS last Friday night. The final score was 58-31, and Coach Francom was pleased with the team's performance, calling the victory a "good team win."

Skyhawk Parents, Students, and Community,

“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says "Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.”  -- Lewis Carroll

Seeing the beauty of the mountains and our valley blanketed in winter snow fills me with conflicting emotions. I love the first snow and the fun that is associated with winter; however, it's difficult to deal with the havoc that winter wreaks on our lives. As members of this community, we've had to learn to deal with the paradox of our winter weather. So enjoy this winter weather, but remember to be careful as well. One great thing about the winter season, though, is the transition into our winter sports and activities here at SHHS, and we're looking forward to watching our students participate and compete in their various sports and activities in the weeks and months to come.

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Debate: Last Friday and Saturday our school's debate program under the direction of Mr. Welton hosted their annual Skyhawk Smackdown. It was the largest Smackdown in the six-year history of the event; in fact, the event was so large that our nearby junior high had to be used as well to accommodate all the participants. 25 schools were represented with nearly 900 entries,  and schools from as far south as Moab HS and as north as Roy HS came to participate in the event. Our SHHS debate team placed 1st in the event with a score of 259! 2nd place went to Juab HS (228), 3rd was Maeser Prep. (140), 4th was taken by Beaver HS (129), and the 5th spot was claimed by Timpview HS (109). Congratulations Skyhawks!

Skyhawk Parents, Students, and Community,

Friendships born on the field of athletic strife are the real gold of competition. Awards become corroded, friends gather no dust.  --  Jesse Owens

This last week our volleyball and football seasons came to an end, and though they may not have ended the way our participating students, coaches, and community would have liked, these two teams competed all season with spirit, heart, and honor. The success of their seasons can be measured in the friendships that were forged, the memories that were made, and the class with which they competed. And isn't that true for all of us? The friendships we make, the experiences we have, and the joy we find while working towards something is why we do what we do, and these teams, coaches, and our community helped remind us of these principles.

Skyhawk Highlights:

Ammon Productions: This last week has been all about Ammon Clark and helping make some of his dreams come true. Ammon was able to live some of his dreams by visiting a movie set, having Cosmo the Cougar come and visit him in an assembly held in his honor, and by being the guest of honor at Manhawk, the movie night, and the Skyhawk Gorge.  It's been awesome to see how supportive our school community has been of Ammon and his family. It's a pleasure to know Ammon and have him in our school.

SHHS Volleyball: The volleyball season came to an end on Saturday. The team won their first match against Clearfield HS on Thursday night but lost their second match in close games to Skyview HS. They next played Skyline HS close as well but were eliminated by them from the tournament. The ladies had a great season finishing second in region and winning their first match in the state tournament. Great job Coach Kathy Treanor and members of the volleyball team!

SHHS Boys' Football: On Friday afternoon our SHHS football team took on the undefeated,  region five champion Roy Royals with a trip to the state semi-finals at stake. The game was a hard-fought game that featured hard hits and passionate plays from both teams. In the end, however, the Royals came out on top by a score of 28-12, but our team competed really well and played as hard as they could. We had a historically great season this year and wish to congratulate Coach Joel Higginson, his staff, and the football team!

Skyhawk Happenings:

  • The annual Skyhawk Debate Smackdown will be this Friday (11/14, 3:00 - 9:00 PM) and Saturday (11/15, 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM) here at SHHS.

We have activities running through Friday (11/14); On Monday (11/17), we will be assisting all of our seniors with university, college, and professional schools and program applications. Seniors should come prepared to apply to a college or university with their Social Security Number and a method to pay online.
  • Our school musical, Footloose, will run from November 20 through November 24. Show times will be at 7:00 PM. Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for students, and $30 for a family. Ms. Stubbs would also like to request any 80's era clothing that you'd like to donate or lend to the production; if you're interested in donating or lending such clothing, email Ms. Stubbs at janalee.stubbs [at] nebo.edu.
  • Mrs. Williams' class will be doing a clothing drive for Tabitha's Way. Our SHHS students will be participating, and the class (senior, junior, or sophomore) that is able to donate the most clothing will win the "Biggest Heart" contest. Encourage your students to participate in this noble cause (more details will be announced at school).
  • There will be a Career Day here at the school on November 25. Students will have the opportunity to hear from career professionals in their 2nd and 3rd period classes on that date.

“The leaves fall, the wind blows, and the farm country slowly changes from the summer cottons into its winter wools.” -- Henry Beston

As this fall season comes to its end and winter is about to settle in, I think about the transition from one term to the next, and I think about the settling we see in our school. Hopefully, by this point in the year, our students have settled into some successful habits with their academics and attendance. However, if the academic and attendance habits our students have settled into aren't as conducive to their success as we'd like them to be, now's a great time to re-evaluate and recommit to be more successful going forward. As administration, faculty, and staff, we are ever working towards helping our students establish habits that will lead to success. I hope your student is having tremendous success; if there's something that needs to change, though, help facilitate that change.

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Volleyball: The volleyball team finished on a high by defeating Provo HS in three straight games to win their Senior Night finale at home. They next play Westlake on Tuesday (11/4) before entering state competition on Thursday at the UCCU Center on UVU's campus; their matches on Thursday are at 3:00 and 6:00 PM. They play Clearfield HS in their first match.

SHHS Boys' Football: The team continues to make school history. The regular season finale consisted of our Skyhawks defeating the SF Dons for the first time in school history by a score of 21-16 in a very hard-fought game. They next continued their historic run by defeating the Highland Rams in the first round of the state playoffs, 14-7. The team  looks to keep their historic streak alive by next playing at Roy HS on Friday (11/7); the tentative game time is 2:30 PM.

SHHS Band: The band competed in state competition on Friday down at Dixie State in St. George. Colorguard finished first and the band finished fourth overall; however, the second, third, and fourth place teams were all within two points of one another. It was basically a toss-up for the final spots. Mr. Larsen emphasized how proud he was of the band and their performance. Great Job band!

SHHS Orchestra: Last week's Halloween Concert by the orchestra was an entertaining affair. The students' performance was awesome, and their teacher's performance was rather entertaining as well. Mr. Wells led the orchestra with a lightsaber (Star Wars) and did the chicken dance while leading the chicken dance song. Overall, the performance was wildly entertaining! Great job orchestra!

SHHS English Department: Congratulations to Kade Morrison, Sam Anderson, and Maren Mehlhoff for the best haiku out of 90 of Mrs. Smithey's students. The winners earned a key card, treat, and registration to the Leadership Conference at UVU on Monday 10/27.

Skyhawk Happenings:

  • State volleyball will be at 3:00 and 6:00 PM on Thursday, November 6 at the UCCU Center.
  • Our annual Skyhawk Gorge will be Monday, November 10 from 5:00-7:00 PM (It's kind of like Costco sample day times twenty).
  • We will be participating in Utah College Application Week (UCAP) here at Salem Hills High School this year. There will be a week's worth of activities running from November 10 through 14; the following Monday (11/17) we will be assisting all of our seniors with university, college, and professional schools and program applications.
  • There will be a Career Day here at the school on November 25. Students will have the opportunity to hear from career professionals in their 2nd and 3rd period classes on that date.
  • For all parents, and especially those of sophomores, ALL detentions must be made up prior to a new term beginning to be eligible to participate in extracurricular activities and sports.
  • Detention will be held before school, during lunch, and after school in room C209 with Ms. Houghton and before school with Mr. Schwenke (room D104); our administrative team continues to offer detention time after school for students interested in biking, running, lifting weights and doing cross fit. “I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.”  -- Edward Everett Hale

As first term comes to an end, it's a great time to reflect on all that has transpired over the course of the past few months here at SHHS. We've seen our fall teams and performing groups have tremendous and  historically successful seasons; we've seen students striving to be "positive in the present" and enrich the lives of others by performing random acts of kindness for one another each day; and we've seen our students growing into individuals that are anchored in integrity, empowered to succeed, and focused on the future. These first few months have not been without a few bumps along the way, but the positive learning experiences that occur here far outweigh the bumps. It is my pleasure to work with our students, you, and this community; working with you and our students inspires our faculty and staff, "to do the something that [we] can do."

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Family and Consumer Science Department: The Family and Consumer Science Department at Salem Hills High recently sponsored a five day Fashion Career Related Tour in New York City.  11 students along with Mrs. Laurie Hansen visited the 9/11 Memorial, Empire State Building, New Amsterdam Theatre Backstage, Staten Island Ferry (to view the Statue of Liberty), and Radio City Music Hall, Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and Central Park.  They also received instruction at Essence Magazine, Olah Inc. of New York, Fashion Institute of Technology, Parsons School of Design and Designer Kenneth King.  Students were entertained with a Broadway Show of their choice which included some attending Wicked, Phantom of the Opera and Aladdin.  Of course the trip included many subway rides, late-night cheesecake parties, lots of shopping at Canal Street and Times Square and miles upon miles of walking!  The New York City excursion is an experience for students to learn firsthand about our global economy, diverse cultures in the United States, social skills, personal independence, problem solving, following directions,  and the importance of their current education.

SHHS Cross Country: The teams competed on Wednesday (10/22) afternoon in the state competition at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City. The teams both ran well and represented our school proudly.  On the boys side, RJ Lundberg was 1st Team All-State and took 7th overall!  For the girls, Haley Johnston was the school's top finisher at 13th place.  She also broke SHHS's Cross Country school record.  Congratulations to all our runners on a great season!

SHHS Volleyball: The ladies were dominant against MMHS on Tuesday of last week. They swept the Lady Golden Eagles in three straight games to win the match. They next play Wasatch  HS on Thursday of this week as they continue to make preparations for state competition.

SHHS Boys' Football: The football team won a hard-fought battle with MMHS on Wednesday night of last week; it was a great win for the seniors to get on Senior Night. Their final region game will be this week against rival Spanish Fork HS; the Skyhawks will be looking for their first win against  the Dons in football. Another highlight this week was that our football standout Porter Gustin was honored as an Army All American, a prestigious award that is given to only 90 high school football players in the country each year. Congratulations Porter!

SHHS Band: The band took first this week at the Davis Cup competition at Davis HS. They also took first in visual performance, musical performance, and auxiliary performance. The band will next be performing in Pleasant Grove on Saturday. Congratulations band and good luck Saturday!

 Skyhawk Happenings:

  • The end of first term is this Thursday, October 23. Look for report cards to be delivered next Friday (10/31).
  • The 6th annual Salem Witches 5K Run and Children's Mile hosted by Coach Thompson's cross country and track teams will be this Saturday, October 25. Registration for the event is online at  www.salemwitchesrun.blogspot.com.

We'd like to honor the family members of our students who are veterans of foreign conflicts.  Students or their family members can email photos of their veterans to salemhillsveterans [at] gmail.com (salemhillsveterans[at]gmail[dot]com).  With emailed photos, please include the submitting student's name, the veteran's name, the relationship to the student, and which conflict(s) he/she is a veteran of.  Please submit the photos by November 1 at the latest.
  • We will be participating in Utah College Application Week (UCAP) here at Salem Hills High School this year. There will be a week's worth of activities running from November 10 through 14; the following Monday (11/17) we will be assisting all of our seniors with university, college, and professional schools and program applications.

  • Our administrative team continues to offer detention time after school for students interested in biking, running, lifting weights and doing cross fit. This pilot program is based on psychologist  John Ratey's theory that exercise sparks cognitive function and improves academic performance and behavior.
  • Ammon Clark, one of our students here at SHHS,  is raising money for the Ronald McDonald House by collecting pop tabs from soda cans. We can help Ammon in his collection efforts by bringing our pop tabs to the school and turning them into the front office, the counseling office, and (or) Mrs. Wilder's room.

Last week our students participated in the Macy's Lip Dub challenge that was organized by our PTA (a big thank you goes to Angela Rogers and Therese Lauritzen for organizing it so well). The lip dub was performed to the Beach Boys' classic hit "Be True To Your School"; as we wrapped up homecoming week with the lip dub and other activities, I couldn't help but think that the song choice was very apropos. Our students are "true" to this school in so many different ways. We see it in their commitment to their studies; we see it in their efforts on the fields and courts of competition; and we see it in their interaction with their peers. They care about our school community and are proud to show their pride. A source indicated to me that Coach Todd Graham, Arizona State's head football coach who was here Friday night to watch the game, commented on the enthusiasm of our students and patrons. He indicated that he's been all over the country but has rarely seen the kind of enthusiasm displayed by our students and  community. It's cool to hear that people outside our community can see that we are true to our school's values of spirit, heart, honor, and success; it makes me, and should make each one of us, proud to be a Skyhawk!

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Cheer: A huge shout out needs to go to our cheer team for all they did during homecoming week to rally support for all our team sports and activities! In addition to their awesome performances at the games, assemblies, and in the Lip Dub, their homecoming decorating of the commons, football field, and players lockers was creative and really added to the spirit of the week.

SHHS Girl's Tennis: Four girls represented our school at the state tournament held at Liberty Park. Maddi Wanner and Kenzi Hancock represented the school in the singles division, and Amanda Ith and Isabel Brockbank represented the school in the doubles division. Though they didn't make it as far as they would have liked, they competed well.

SHHS Cross Country: Region competition was on Saturday at Timpview HS, and both the boys and girls ran well. The boys took 3rd and the girls finished in 4th.  Both teams qualified for state competition on Oct 22 at Sugarhouse Park.  RJ Lundberg ran great taking 2nd overall for boys, and Hailey Johnston also ran great finishing 4th overall for girls.

SHHS Volleyball: The girls' volleyball team played a great match against Springville HS on Tuesday night. The match went to a game five, and the fifth game was neck and neck all the way down to the end where our Lady Skyhawks were edged out by a final score of 15-13. They next play Maple Mountain HS here on Tuesday, October 14 at 6:30 PM.

SHHS Boys' Football: The team played Springville High in a battle for second place in region Friday night and played spectacularly in front of a boisterous and enthusiastic crowd and visiting ASU coach, Todd Graham, who was here on a recruiting trip. After allowing a touchdown to Springville on their first possession, the Skyhawks held the Red Devils scoreless while scoring 34 points of their own. The team is having their best season in school history, currently holding a record of 7-1. They next play Maple Mountain HS on Wednesday night (10/15) due to the shortened week for fall break.

SHHS Band: Our SHHS Band performed really well and finished 3rd at their competition at BYU on Saturday.  They were pleased with their finish in the 3A division which is a division up from where they have competed previously. The band will next be competing at Davis HS on October 21.

SHHS Student Council: The student council did a tremendous job making homecoming week a huge success. They worked tirelessly throughout the weeks leading up to homecoming week and during homecoming week to plan and carryout activities that involved all students here at SHHS. Our student council does a great job representing our school and their peers.

Skyhawk Happenings:

  • Fall Break  is this week, October 16-19.
  • The end of first term is next Thursday, October 23.
  • For all Athletes needing updated physicals for winter/spring sports, we will be having physicals in the gym at 3:00 PM on October 21. Students must pay $20 to the finance office before getting their physicals done (we can't accept insurance).  If you haven't heard, there are new rules starting this year that require all student athletes to get a new/updated physical prior to tryouts every year. For example, if your athlete received a physical last year for basketball, they will have to get a new one done this year, but if they had one done for a fall sport this year, they are covered until next year.
  • The 6th annual Salem Witches 5K Run and Children's Mile hosted by Coach Thompson's cross country and track teams will be on Saturday, October 25. Registration for the event is online at  www.salemwitchesrun.blogspot.com.

"Homecoming means coming home to what is in your heart." --Author Unknown

This week is homecoming week at SHHS, and the excitement in the school is palpable. Though our school is just six years old, a rich tradition and culture has been established here, and one of the cool things about a young school, and any school for that matter, is that we all get to play a part in the development and dissemination of our school's traditions and culture. So be a part of homecoming week, and come and celebrate the creation and sharing of our school's traditions and culture, not only this week but in the weeks, months, and years to come.

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Girls' Soccer: The girls lost to Springville HS in a nail biter on Tuesday afternoon. The score seesawed back and forth until Springville eventually won the contest 5-4. Their Thursday night game sadly ended with the win going to Wasatch HS by a score of 2-0. Though the scores didn't finish in the favor of the Skyhawks, both games were reminiscent of Coach Lombardi's famous quote: "We didn't lose the game, we just ran out of time." The girls have had a great year, they've played some great soccer, and have represented our school well, and they still have a chance at a play-in game if Spanish Fork HS beats Springville HS today.

SHHS Girl's Tennis: The girls' tennis team did well at their region tournament. Four girls are going to state. Kenzi Hancock and Maddi Wanner are going to state as individual competitors, and Amanda Ith and Isabel Brockbank are going to compete as doubles. The JV team did well at the region JV tournament. There were 120 girls in the tournament, and out of the 17 that competed for SHHS, 13 placed. The future looks great for SHHS Girls' Tennis!

SHHS Cross Country: The team ran well in Park City in their last tune up meet before they run their region meet this Saturday at Kiwanis Park in Provo.

SHHS Volleyball: The girls' volleyball team had a bit of a rough go against Timpview last Tuesday night, losing 3-0; however, as they always seem to do, they rebounded great against Spanish Fork High winning 3 games to 1. They concluded their week of play by placing seventh out of 30 teams at the Bingham Tournament. The girls next face Springville at Springville HS on Tuesday evening at 6:30.

SHHS Boys' Football:  The football team had one of their hardest fought victories to date, rallying late to come from twelve points down in the fourth quarter to beat Orem HS, 27-26. Key defensive plays sparked the come-back win. Next up, the team faces the Springville Red Devils here on Friday night for homecoming.

SHHS Band: The band traveled to Logan last week to participate in a competition at USU. They continue to improve as young band members get more and more experience in competition. They next travel to Herriman to compete on Tuesday evening.

SHHS Student Body  Officers: The high school underwent a complete transformation over the weekend, and everything has been transformed into various games one might find in a classic arcade. Pac-Man, Mario, and even a few Angry Birds, in addition to several others, have taken up residence in the school, and it is truly an awesome sight to behold. Our SBO's did a fabulous job transforming our school into an arcade for homecoming week.

Skyhawk Happenings:

  • Homecoming week began yesterday and runs through Friday (October 10), and there are  several great events planned for the week. There will be a movie night on Tuesday at 7:00 PM in the auditorium.  The annual Skyhawk Rally will be on Wednesday at 7:00 PM on the football field.  On Thursday at 4:00 PM there will be Powder Puff games on the football field. On Friday after the morning assembly, the school will be creating and competing in the Macy's Lip Dub, which has been very well organized by our local PTA; the song we will be performing is "Be True to Your School" by the Beach Boys. The homecoming game on Friday evening is against Springville HS at 7:00 PM.  Finally, the week's activities will conclude on Saturday evening with the Homecoming dance; the dance will run from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. The Theme of the dance is Hero; admission is $20 a couple.  Pictures will be $15 per couple and $20 per group for those interested.

Skyhawk Parents,

Edith Wharton, the author of numerous classic tales, profoundly stated, "There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it." We all admire people who shine brightly and influence us with their brilliant character; conversely, we occasionally encounter those whose light is rather dim or, even worse, those who would stifle the brilliance of others out of jealousy or spite. As educators at Salem Hills High School we are striving to encourage our students to shine brightly and to also look for opportunities to help reflect the brilliance they, and we,  see in one another. Let's take the opportunity as an educational community to help our students spread their light in all that they do!

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Boys' Golf: The boys' golf team completed their best season to date, improving by 222 strokes from where they finished last year. They had multiple players shoot in the 70s at tournaments this year. Though they finished just a few strokes out of state competition at Wasatch State Park (the Lake Course) last week, they had a great season, and with four sophomores contributing significantly to the team this year, the future looks bright for the boys' golf team.

SHHS Girls' Soccer: The girls lost to MMHS on Tuesday afternoon, 4-0, but bounced back nicely against SFHS on Thursday winning 5-1. They are in the heat of the playoff hunt and could finish anywhere from 2nd to 4th in the region, depending on their finish. Thursday night will be Senior Night in which the team will honor their seniors: Paige Robbins, Lexi Van Tassel, and Bethany Wride.

SHHS Girl's Tennis: This week the ladies will participate in their region tournament which will be on October 2 and 3 at Springville High School.

SHHS Cross Country: Salem Hills High School and Coach Bart Thompson hosted one of the biggest, if not the biggest,  meets in the state last Friday night. 37 teams from around the state participated in the event. The boys' team finished in 12th place and the girls' finished in 13th place which they were pleased with considering the caliber of competition they faced.

SHHS Volleyball: The girls' volleyball team is currently in second place in region and has a match against Timpview HS on Tuesday (9/30) night this week for the region's top spot. The game will be a blue-out game for the supporting crowd, so don your blue apparel and come support the team Tuesday night.

SHHS Boys' Football:  The football team had another strong performance last week against Provo HS. They won their game by a score of 42-7. They look to keep their two-game winning streak alive against Orem HS on Thursday night; the game will be played at Orem HS.

SHHS Band: Our band participated in the Nebo Tournament of Bands in Payson on Saturday. Though they didn't win the accolades they were hoping for, their performance was great and they represented the school well, even though they had to play through a lot of rain and  even a lightning delay.

Skyhawk Happenings:

  • There will be a meeting on September 30 at 2:30 in the library for all students who are interested in applying to be a Sterling Scholar. Applications will be available at the meeting and thereafter in the library from Mrs. Rawle. The deadline to apply is October 15.
  • There will be a wrestling meeting with Mr. Brindley on September 30 at 6:30 PM in the SHHS cafeteria for all boys interested in wrestling this year.
  • There will be a swim team parent meeting on Thursday, October 2 at 7:00 PM in the library computer lab.
  • The 2014 PTA Reflections contest being held this year at SHHS will be rewarded with cash awards for winners!
