As the thunderclouds rolled in yesterday at graduation, we all watched anxiously wondering what calamity the storm would bring with it. We probably all went through a number of worst-case scenarios in our minds; however, after about ten minutes we were relieved to see the sun fighting its way through the gloom to make for a glorious ceremony. And as I stood there, a little wet, and congratulated our seniors on their accomplishments, I couldn't help feeling just how fitting the scene was.

Like the sun fighting through the gloom of the storm, our seniors have battled through their share of gloom to get to that glorious finale of graduation. Whether it's been academic, social, or personal gloom, they've endured the storm and have shone through brilliantly! And isn't this so true to life. Clouds will come, we're going to get rained on a little bit (or a lot); however, the sun will come, and to quote the great George Harrison, "It's alright" and will be alright going forward; we just have to do our best to find our sun!

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Success: According to U.S. News and World Report, SHHS ranks 9th in the state of Utah for academic success (http://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/utah/districts/nebo-district/salem-hills-high-20224). Congratulations to our awesome teachers and phenomenal staff!

SHHS Scholarships: This year our students earned a total of $4,251,714.00 in scholarships which is up from last year's total of $2,367,928.00 for a difference of $1,883, 786.00. Way to go SHHS seniors and students!

SHHS Orchestra Students: Mat and Mauri Stokes, two of our seniors here at SHHS, were selected by the Utah Symphony to perform with their music mentors in an all-star performance of high school musicians at Abravanel Hall on May 19. Students who performed represented the best of Utah's youth orchestras. Congratulations to Mat and Mauri! They represented our school very well.

SHHS Musical Theater: Jessica Morgan, a junior here at SHHS, competed in Chicago last weekend in the National Musical Theater Competition. She placed 3rd in the competition. Congratulations to this talented student!

SHHS Track and Field: The Salem Hills HS Track teams wrapped up a wonderfully successful season last week at the state championships at BYU.  The boys and girls competed fiercely through the rain, hail, wind and cold and represented our school with Spirit, Heart, Honor and Success.  Both teams capped their seasons by finishing 3rd place overall.  Coach Thompson and his coaching staff would like to let everyone know how proud they are of each and every member of the team.  They fought and clawed for every inch, every second, and every point; he would like to let his athletes know how amazing they were to coach.

SHHS Baseball: The boys' baseball team came up just short of the state title by losing a closely contested game to region rival Spanish Fork HS by a score of 7-6 in the semi-final game of the winners' bracket of the 4A baseball state championship (Spanish Fork HS went on to win the championship). The team had a great season and competed with class and dignity throughout the entire season; with many players coming back next year, the future is extremely bright for the program. Congratulations to Coach Haney and this year's team!

SHHS Fairchild Challenge Team: The SHHS Fairchild Challenge team took 1st place in the 2015 Thanksgiving Point Fairchild Challenge event. As winners of the event our students earned $1000 dollars that will go towards supporting environmental programs and initiatives at our school. The following students were members of the team: Kyla Anderson, Audrey Barney, Nick Brain, Monika Cloward, Jason Cox, Sarah Deeb, Cheyanne Deeben, Taylor Gasser, Nathan Moser, Vethera Nixon, Josh Peck, Elizabeth Rash, Jesse Rowley, Sydney Shuler, Olivia Trent, and Lucas Walker.

Grete Weitz, the first woman to run a marathon in under two and a half hours, said,  "For every finish-line tape a runner breaks, complete with the cheers of the crowd and the clicking of hundreds of cameras, there are the hours of hard and often lonely work that rarely gets talked about." With our track teams' winning boys' and girls' region titles last week, this quote seemed apropos. Our SHHS track teams' two titles certainly represent hours and hours of dedication and hard work.

Like our tack teams' members, so many of our students have committed themselves to achieving their very best in what they do, whether it be academics, art, music, building trades, or sport, and they've done it without the cheers and fanfare of crossing a finish line. As our seniors prepare to cross that finish line of graduation, we commend them for the, "hours of hard and lonely work" that they've put into getting to this point. We look forward to witnessing and cheering their finish!

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS FCCLA Recognition: Congratulations to our own Mrs. Laurie Hansen who was selected as an Adviser Mentor of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America for her accomplishments as a leader and mentor in her field. Congratulations Mrs. Hansen on this well-deserved honor!

SHHS Tennis: Last week our JV boys played really well in a tournament at Wasatch HS. Kyle Aldridge, Jayden Parkinson, Jacob Anderson, and Justin Christensen all took second in their singles divisions. Cooper Page and Caleb Mulder placed 2nd in 1st Doubles; Spencer Giles and Dalton Compton placed 3rd in 2nd Doubles; Riley Lewis and Drew Meservy placed 1st in 3rd Doubles; and Isaac Johnson and Wade Meservy placed 1st in 4th Doubles. Congratulations tennis team!

SHHS Track and Field: Congratulations to our men's and women's track and field teams on winning both Region VIII Championship titles this past week!  Both teams had dominating performances!  Several team members contributed critical performances that secured the win.  Our teams also had several more school records go down over the two-day meet, bringing the total to 19 new school records out of 32 events this season!!  Way to go Skyhawks!!

The team will next compete at the state championships at BYU this Friday and Saturday.  We wish our men's and women's  track teams good luck!

SHHS Baseball: The boys' baseball team defeated Provo HS twice last week to secure the Region VIII championship. Last Tuesday, after the game, the seniors on the team were recognized for their hard work and contributions to the team and school. We have a few positions on the PTSA Board still available!  This is an excellent opportunity for you to get to know the teachers, staff, and administration at Salem Hills High School as well as provide a needed service for the school.  This isn't just for mothers!  We encourage fathers or any other guardians to get involved as well!  Please contact Angela Rogers at rogerskk [at] yahoo.com (rogerskk[at]yahoo[dot]com) if you would like to serve on next year's board.  Also, our yearly fundraiser - March Madness - did not receive the response we had hoped for.  Many parents I talked with said they didn't know about it or didn't receive the envelopes from their student.  However, you can still donate any amount you wish to by going to our website at http://shhsptsa.com/donate.aspx.  100% of the funds we receive (minus PayPal fees) are put back into the school -- teacher appreciation, parent conferences teacher dinners, Halloween dance, spirit activities, Reflections awards, Senior scholarships and more!  Also, in order to help with funding programs for next year, we are now taking orders for graduation leis athttp://shhsptsa.com/graduationleis.aspx.  These will be available for pickup the morning of graduation, May 28th.  We are also selling "Have a Sweet Summer" candy grams during lunch the next two weeks.  Thank you for your generosity and support for Salem Hills High School!  One more note -- we would like to invite all parents and guardians to join our Facebook Group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/salemhillsptsa/ to stay up to date on PTSA events and activities.

All other times must be scheduled in advance.  Please pay the finance office prior to testing and bring your receipt when you check in ($5 per test).   Many students taking Concurrent Enrollment courses next year need to have a qualifying ACT or Accuplacer score.  All incoming Sophomores taking Concurrent Enrollment through the Sophomore Exception application need an Accuplacer score.  To find out what UVU requires, to check deadlines or print paperwork, please visit their websitehttp://www.uvu.edu/concurrent/; prerequisite information can be found at http://www.uvu.edu/concurrent/registration.html. Contact Jenett Houghton at jenett.houghton [at] nebo.edu (jenett[dot]houghton[at]nebo[dot]edu) for questions and scheduling.
  • The National Honor Society is doing a collection for the Nebo Pantry.  The Nebo Pantry is a great resource for students in our district to get resources for life, and it is housed behind Landmark School in Spanish Fork and benefits all students in Nebo.  NHS students have developed a bracket system to pit the B4 class periods against each other to see who can collect the most.  The winning teachers from each stage of the bracket may or may not be asked to do humiliating and (or) embarrassing things for winning which students will be allowed to witness; ergo, students should have plenty of incentive to participate.
  • UVU is offering (for free) an online, self-paced math refresher course this summer. The intended audience is for juniors and seniors who are looking to improve their math ACT scores or math Accuplacer scores for better math class options; the course is specifically designed with ACT and Accuplacer in mind. It has yielded high results from students who have completed the course before. The course is offered through Canvas and instructor support from UVU is available throughout the course. Last Saturday I represented our administrative team in a drift trike race. I'd never raced a drift trike before, so I took advice from Mr. Neves and our students as to how to best navigate the course that had been set up for us. As I raced through the course, everything went very smoothly, and I felt like I handled the race well, completely under control. Well, after all the administrator's race times were submitted, I was surprised to learn that my time was the slowest of the five administrator racers, and the words of Mario Andretti seemed to apply to me: "If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough." I needed to attack the course with more speed but was happy to cross the finish line with the drift trike and myself in one piece.

As our students navigate their educational courses,  sometimes they may need to speed up a little bit, and sometimes they may need to slow things down . Most importantly, they need to find their successful speed.  At SHHS we are committed to helping our students navigate their educational courses and find their successful speed. Like Mr. Neves and our students helped me navigate the drift trike course, we are a faculty and staff committed to helping our students navigate their high school experience. We encourage our students to speed up when necessary, and conversely, we provide warnings and caution when our students' courses or their speed is not conducive to their success. Most importantly, we encourage and help them to finish their race; I look forward to watching them finish!

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Hockey Representative: Jayson Rencher, a junior here at SHHS, was selected as a member of the All-Utah Hockey Team which represented our state in a national tournament held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania over spring break. Jayson was one of 20 players selected for this honor! Congratulations Jayson!

SHHS Drift Trike Competition: As mentioned previously, last Saturday (4/18) our students participated in the Nebo Trikefest Competition at Spanish Fork HS. Students from the district high schools raced drift trikes that they had built in their welding classes. SHHS was very well represented in the competition categories. John Hill placed 1st with the fastest time on the track, Connor Peterson placed 2nd, and Wyatt Heaton finished in 3rd. Victor Tracy won the Non-motorized Freestyle Competition, and Skylar Simpson won for Best Design. The welding and workmanship of our students was remarkable. Really the only disappointment of the day was the administrator racer representing our school, me, who came in 5th out of five racers.

SHHS Choirs: Last week on April 22, three of our Salem Hills HS Choirs participated in the Region VIII Large Choir Festival at Timpview HS.  All three choirs: Concert Choir, Serendipity, and Men's Camerata  earned straight superior ratings and have been invited to perform at the State Choral Festival at the University of Utah on May 16. Congratulations to our awesome choirs!

SHHS Wrestling: SHHS senior Jacob Armstrong finished in 2nd place at Nationals which were held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on April 3. He lost to a wrestler from Texas in an incredibly competitive match, 5-1. Congratulations Jacob for doing so well at Nationals!

SHHS Girls' Golf: Last week the ladies competed at Spanish Oaks GC and hosted a match at the Gladstan GC. Girls who competed last week included Sariah Lee, Brooke Terry, Dacia Johnson, and Mallory Hanks (also on the team: Jenna Dey). Each week the ladies are improving and competing well. They next play on Tuesday (4/28) at Hobble Creek GC.

SHHS Tennis: The tennis team played great in their tournament over the weekend (4/24 & 4/25) which was hosted here and at SFHS. They finished in 2nd behind Desert Hills HS (state champions last year). They next travel to Timpview HS for a match on Tuesday (4/28) at 3:30 PM.

SHHS Track and Field: The Salem Hills Track Team competed at American Fork High School last Saturday (4/18) competing against 11 of the best schools in Utah, mostly 5A schools.  The Lady Skyhawks continued their undefeated season with a big win outscoring the 2nd place team by 50 points!  The men finished in 2nd place losing only to Orem.  Great job Skyhawks!

Congratulations to Devin Minson for breaking his own school record in the 300 Meter Hurdles, Coulson Boggess for breaking his own school record in the 100 Meters, Porter Gustin for reclaiming the school Shot Put record, and Alison Pray for breaking the 3200 Meters school record!  Way to go Skyhawks!

SHHS Baseball: Our SHHS baseball team had a good week against Olympus HS winning both their games against the Titans. This week they face Maple Mountain HS in two pivotal games with region title implications. They play at MMHS on Tuesday (4/28) and here at SHHS on Thursday (4/30). Both games begin at 3:30 PM. Come out and cheer on the baseball team as they compete for the region title.

SHHS Boys' Soccer: The boys played a very hard-fought match against Maple Mountain HS on Thursday evening (4/23) playing the match into triple overtime where Maple Mountain HS eked out  a 1-0 victory. The team competed with class and conducted themselves very well on the pitch. They next play at Spainish Fork HS on Tuesday (4/28).

SHHS Softball: Our lady Skyhawks played well against Timpview HS on Thursday bouncing back for a nice win after losing on Tuesday to the Red Devils. The ladies next play at Maple Mountain HS on Thursday (4/30). Come support the team as they look to play into playoff contention.

"I stuck my head out the window this morning and spring kissed me bang in the face." --Langston Hughes

Spring in Utah will kiss you and hit you in many ways, and today it seems to be playing its typical April Fool's joke on us where it gives us a huge dose of winter for a bit. Oh well, spring's winter usually only lasts for a day, if that, at least that's what I'm hoping for.

Speaking of hopes, I hope your spring break was restful and rejuvenating and helped you get your second wind because we'll need it for this final race down the stretch of the school year. Whether this year's finish line is graduation or the completion of a sophomore or junior year, it's sure to contain many memory making moments. Let's work hard and enjoy this final sprint!

Have a great week and GO SKYHAWKS!

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Girls' Golf: Our girls have played in 3 matches so far this year.  They've played in a 9-hole match at Fox Hollow GC, an 18-hole match at East Bay in Provo, and a 9-hole match at Nephi GC.  This year's team includes Dacia Johnson, Sariah Lee, Jenna Dey, Brooke Terry, and Mallory Hanks, and they have been competing well this year in a strong region. They next play on April 20 at the Spanish Oaks GC. Good luck ladies!

Fairchild Challenge Global Competition: Four of our student are finalists in the Fairchild Challenge Global Competition: Devri Adams, Audrey Barney, Sydney Shuler, and Olivia Trent. The competition requires students to submit a drawing of "Plants and Pollinators". We wish these students good luck with the final selections.

SHHS Track and Field: The Salem Hills Track Team continued its successful season last week at the Juab Invitational.  Both the boys' and girls' teams won the team titles defeating the 10 other schools present!  Great Job Skyhawks!  Congratulations to Coulson Boggess for breaking the school record in the 100 meters and RJ Lundberg for breaking the school record in the 1600 meters!

Reflections Display: Two of our students will have their Reflections entries displayed this summer at the Leonardo Museum in Salt Lake City: Kennedy Merrill (3-D Art) and Hailey Boggess (Music/Piano Competition). Congratulations to these talented students!

Dillard's and 17 Magazine's Polished Prom Contest: Sierra Draper a junior here at SHHS won the Dillard's and 17 Magazine's Polished Prom Contest. She won $3000 in clothing at Dillard's, professional hair and makeup for five friends, limousine service to and from the prom, swag bags for six, the services of a professional photographer throughout the night, a cover photo for the magazine, and an article about our school which will appear in the magazine. Congratulations to Sierra for being the lucky winner of the contest, and we look forward to the coverage the magazine gives Sierra and our school.

SHHS Baseball: The boys' baseball team had a great week last week, defeating Wasatch HS on back-to-back days by scores of 13-3 and 12-3. Last night (4/14) they battled Spanish Fork HS and gusting winds and rain to win in thrilling fashion, scoring five runs in the top of the 7th inning to take a 9-5 lead which would hold in bottom of the seventh for the win. They play traditional region power Spanish Fork HS again on Thursday (4/16) here at SHHS at 3:30 PM.

SHHS Boys' Soccer: The boys are coming off of a win against Payson HS last night by a score of 1-0, and like our other teams, they had to battle the elements as much as the Lions. They also had a win last week against Springville HS (2-1) and a loss against Wasatch HS (4-2). They next play against Provo HS on Thursday (4/16) at 4:00 PM.

SHHS Softball: The ladies played very well in the Payson Invitational over the weekend winning games against Brighton, Cyprus, and Grand High Schools. “It's spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you've got it, you want—oh, you don't quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!” --Mark Twain

Next week is our spring break, and I think all of us can relate a little to what Mark Twain was talking about when he spoke of "spring fever." Our hope is that the break helps you find a portion of what your heart is aching for, whether it's an adventure, time with family and friends, rest and relaxation, or a little of each. We hope you have a fabulous break and come back recharged, energized, and ready to finish the 2014-2015 school year strong!

Have a great week and GO SKYHAWKS!

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Track and Field: Congratulations again to the Skyhawk Track team on another great meet over the weekend!  They competed at the UVU Invitational against 28 schools from Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, and California.  The Men's team finished in 7th place overall, and the Women's team continued their undefeated season by finishing 1st place overall!  Great job Skyhawks!

This team continues to set and break records (sometimes their own)! RJ Lundberg broke his own record in the 2 mile run with a time of 9:33. Haley Johnston broke her own record in the 2 mile run with a time of 11:24. The girls 4x100 Relay team (Ashlyn Bradley, Amber Edmondson, Kaylie Adams and Paige Simmons) broke their own school record with a time of 49.64. Also, we failed to recognize Devin Minson last week for breaking the school record in the 300 Hurdles with a time of 41.61 in a meet at Provo HS.

The track team's next meet is today (3/31) here at Salem Hills HS against Timpview and Spanish Fork.  Come out and support our awesome team!

SHHS 2015 Knowledge Bowl Champions: The champions of this year's SHHS Knowledge Bowl were Alyson Jardine, Caleb Sly, Jenna Rhodes, Mike Abbott, and Sam Lofthouse. Their intellect and wit were on full display as they defeated each round's competitors to claim the annual Knowledge Bowl Title, their champions hoodies, the annual Tucano's lunch, and of course bragging rights! Congratulations to this intellectually gifted group!

SHHS Skyhawks of the Month: This month's outstanding students were selected by our school's trade and technical department teachers and were selected for their outstanding character and work ethic. The students who most embody SHHS Spirit, Heart, Honor, and Success this month include Darby Thomas (selected by the student council), Grant Gunderson (selected by Mr. Neves), Stephanie Jones, (selected by Mr. Andrews), Logen Preece (selected by Mr. Andrus), Tyler Butler (selected by Mr. Wilson), and Mariah Manookin (selected by Mr. Williams). Congratulations to these outstanding students!

In the top bracket Sven Jamsa and Dallin McCarthy finished in 3rd place at #1 doubles. Nick Trotter and Levi Ward also finished in 3rd place at #2 doubles.  Kyle Alldredge  had a very good tournament at 3rd singles finishing in 4th place in the top bracket.

SHHS Baseball: After defeating Springville HS in their previous two matchups, within five days, our Skyhawks dropped an 8-5 decision on Thursday night to go 2-1 with the Red Devils in a six-day stretch. They next play here against Timpview HS this afternoon (3/31)  at 3:30 PM and at Timpview HS on Thursday (4/2) at 3:30 PM.

SHHS Boys' Soccer: Our team survived a fiercely contested match against Spanish Fork HS on Thursday night by a score of 3-2. Most the scoring occurred early with SHHS scoring the first two goals and SFHS quickly responding with two goals of their own. The match was a stalemate until SHHS scored a late goal for the win.
