Day dawns on another great day at SHHS. 98.36 KB

Thomas Jefferson said, "Enlighten the people generally, and tyranny and oppressions of body and mind will vanish like evil spirits at the dawn of day." We've had some really cool sunrises lately, and I was able to take a picture of a particularly awesome one last week. However, as is usually the case, my picture didn't come near to doing the sunrise justice. It did, though, serve to get me thinking about the quote I included in this week's newsletter and how the dawn of day gives us new life and hope.

As we begin a new and final term of the year, I hope the experiences your student(s) is (are) having here at Salem Hills High School are helping them gain the enlightenment and understanding they will draw from in future days to overcome the "tyranny" and "oppressions" of "mind" that they face.  It is our sincere hope as a faculty and staff that your student's days dawn with spirit, heart, honor, and success that they've learned, and continue to learn, here at Salem Hills High School.

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Weekly Newsletter 22

As you undoubtedly have picked up on if you've followed these newsletters, I love the profound wisdom that can be found in the simplest of quotes, and this week I found such wisdom in this quote from Babe Ruth: "Every strike brings me closer to the next homerun." I guess with the spring weather and our spring sports in full swing (pardon the pun), I chose to focus my message on this  baseball quote and metaphor. We certainly have all had our share of strikes and strikeouts (to use the metaphor) in life. However, it's comforting to realize that Thomas Edison didn't invent the light bulb with his first swing; Orville and Wilbur Wright struck out a few times with their flying machine; and the homeruns known as the iPod, iTunes, and iPhone gave Steve Jobs the distinction of masterminding, what some would say, the greatest turnaround in business history only after he had his share of strikeouts. The point is, we can't quit; we can't give up; we have to swing with all our might because that next hit might be one of our homeruns!

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Debate: The national debate qualifiers were held last week, and two students from our school qualified for the NSDA (National Speech and Debate Association) Nationals in Dallas, Texas this June. Jenessa Pratt qualified 1st in Oratory, and Juliana Millet qualified 1st in Congress. Our school also had several students qualify for the NSDA Nationals as alternates: Caleb Sly (Lincoln Douglas), Emily Miller and Sierra Draper (Policy), and Hannah Wallentine and Alea Simmons (Public Forum).

SHHS also qualified three students for the NCFL (National Catholic Forensic League) Nationals which will be held in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in may: Caleb Sly, 1st, Lincoln Douglas; Juliana Millet, 1st, Congress; and Jenessa Pratt, 1st, Oratory.

Coach Welton was very proud of the overall performance of his team. He stated that this is the first year any student from SHHS qualified for NSDA Nationals, and three students is the most that have qualified for NCFL. Congratulations to our debate team!

SHHS PALS Ball: Our annual PALS Ball was held last Friday night (3/6) in the cafeteria, and our SHHS students danced into the night burning up the dance floor with their impressive moves. The theme of the ball was Despicable Me, and there actually was a sighting of a dancing, yellow minion. It was a great night, and we appreciate all who made it so!

SHHS Baseball: Our SHHS baseball team won the Desert Hills Tournament in St. George last weekend (3/6 & 3/7). The team defeated Copper Hills HS, Murray HS, Desert Hills HS, and Murray HS again to claim the tournament title. Last night (3/10) the team played Herriman HS and won in dramatic fashion, 11-10, on a walk-off balk. The team next plays Saturday (3/14) at 11:00 AM here at SHHS.  Come out and support the baseball team as they look to continue their winning ways.

SHHS Boys' Soccer: The boys' soccer team kicked off their season against Jordan HS last Friday (3/6) afternoon. They played the Beatdiggers to a 1-1 tie, and played well and competed hard throughout the match. The team played last night (3/10) at Riverton HS and lost to the defending 5A champions 3-0. The team next plays Payson HS here on March 16.

SHHS Softball: Our state champion team of a year ago began the defense of their title against Manti HS yesterday and did so with an impressive win defeating the Templars 9-1. The ladies next play on Friday (3/13) in the Dixie Tournament in St. George.

SHHS Sterling Scholar Finalists: Kenny Van Ausdal  (Art) and Nicole Flinders (Vocal Performance) were runners-up  for State Sterling Scholars. Congratulations to these two exceptionally gifted students!

SHHS Track and Field: The boys' and girls' track teams got off to a great start in their first meet of the season which was held at Springville HS yesterday (3/10). Our teams competed against Springville HS and Wasatch HS in the tri-team meet; though the final meet results aren't in yet, Coach Thompson was pleased with how the teams performed. "A good leader can engage in a debate frankly and thoroughly, knowing that at the end he and the other side must be closer, and thus emerge stronger. You don't have that idea when you are arrogant, superficial, and uninformed." --Nelson Mandella

I came across this quote recently, and it coincided nicely with our debate team winning their sixth consecutive region debate title. This quote also gave me pause to reflect on our school, our faculty, and staff and the impact they are having on our students. I am proud to work at SHHS and associate with colleagues who, to borrow from the ideas of Mandella's quote, prioritize student learning and teach our students the importance of putting aside arrogance, overcoming superficial behavior, and ensuring our students are not uninformed or ignorant, be it in preparation for a debate or not.

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Debate: As mentioned previously, our debate team won their sixth consecutive region title last Saturday (2/28)! Congratulations to Coach Welton and the dabate team: Karlee Bowles (3rd, Foreign Extemp.),  Caleb Sly (1st, Lincoln Douglas), Andrew Christensen (2nd, Lincoln Douglas), Juliana Millet (1st, Student Congress), Elisheba Armstrong (2nd, Student Congress), Ethan Adams (4th, Student Congress), Bethany Davis (6th, Student Congress), Seth Erickson and Erik Johnson (1st, Public Forum), Amy Robinson and Maleah Cook (4th, Public Forum), Kenny Van Ausdal (1st, Oratory), Albina Truax (Tied for 2nd, Oratory), Jenessa Pratt (Tied for 2nd, Oratory), Amber Southwick (1st, National Extemp.), Jeff DeGraffenried (Tied for 3rd, National Extemp.), Ashton Overbay (1st, Impromptu), and Jackson Martin (4th, Impromptu). Next up for the debate team will be a national qualifier held here at SHHS this Thursday, March 5.

SHHS FBLA Competition: At this week's FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) competition students from SHHS finished with high scores in several categories. Sierra Draper finished 2nd in Job interview; Lauren Bennett finished 3rd in Word Processing; Lauren also finished 3rd in Database Design and Application and 9th in Business Communications; Hannah Wheelwright placed 10th in Public Speaking. Congratulations to these future business leaders!

"Our business in life is not to get ahead of others but to get ahead of ourselves--to break our own records, to outstrip our yesterdays by our today, to do our work with more force than ever before."

 -- Stewart B. Johnson

Too often it seems that we get caught up in the competition in and of life. The competitive nature of life, certainly, is all around us. We see it in sports, employment, and academics, just to name a few of life’s endeavors. Though we can’t control what others do, we can control those things over which we have control: attitude, approach, work ethic, and motivation. By competing with ourselves and facing our daily challenges with, “…more force than ever before,” we will be prepared for life’s competitions; it’s my great pleasure to be a part of a school that helps our students work through and prepare for such competitions!

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Poetry Out Loud: Bethany Davis was the winner of our school's Poetry Out Loud competition, and she went on to place 2nd for all of Utah County. We are proud of her and the way she represented our school so well. Congratulations Bethany!

SHHS Wrestling: Our wrestling team had another great year! They finished in 5th place at the state wrestling tournament which was held on February 11 and 12 at the UCCU Center on the Campus of UVU.  Jacob Armstrong took 1st in state in his weight division for the third time and was named the 4A Outstanding Wrestler of the Year; he also won the super state tournament three times which has never been accomplished before. Jaxon Van Tassell placed 2nd in his weight division for the second time in as many years, Jaxon Bowden placed 5th in his division, and Brennan Gerratt placed 6th in his. Congratulations to Coach Brindley, his staff, and all of our outstanding wrestlers.

SHHS Cheer: Our cheer team traveled to Anaheim, California where they participated in the UCA West Coast Championship. The team was awesome placing 4th in the super varsity category which featured teams from all over the western United States. The team conducted themselves with class and sportsmanship throughout their time in California and were awesome ambassadors for our community and SHHS. Congratulations to Coach Simmons, Coach Best, and all the girls who competed!

SHHS Girls' Basketball: The girls' season came to a close last Thursday (2/19) against Mountain View HS in the second round of the state tournament at Salt Lake Community College, and though the season ended sooner than the team would have liked, it was a pleasure to watch them compete this year and win the Region 8 title! Congratulations to Coach Francom, his staff, and the team on a great season!

SHHS Sterling Scholar Finalists: Three students at our school are finalists for the state Sterling Scholar Award. Our school's finalists are Kenny Van Ausdal  - Art, Bethany Wride - English, and Nicole Flinders - Vocal Performance. Congratulations to these exceptionally gifted students. They competed Tuesday night at Corner Canyon HS and are currently awaiting the results of the state competition.

SHHS Production of Standing Still Standing: Our SHHS drama department did a fabulous job with their production and performance of Melissa Leilani Larson's play, Standing Still Standing. The contemporary comedy which gives commentary on issues relating to our modern world, such as the use of social media, was brought to life by an enthusiastic SHHS cast (Joey Shearer, Isabel  Traux, Madeline Stocks, Jenna Rhodes, Tyler Cooper, Joshua Kitchen, KC Johnson, Adrienne Cox, Brooke Terry, Ethan Mayfield, Chance Palfreyman, Ammon Flint, Parker Brook, Lauren Bennett, Jershon Nielsen, Brayden Kane, Beth Mitchell, and Amber Southwick). They did an awesome job; their performances were energetic and exciting. Congratulations to Ms. Stubbs and the cast and crew on a great show!

SHHS Boys' Basketball: The boys' basketball season came to an end last Friday night. Our boys battled the Bulldogs down to the wire but lost on a made three point shot by Provo as time expired. The team battled hard all year and played the region competition tremendously close throughout the year, losing some heartbreakers. We'd like to thank Coach DeGraffenreid, our team, and our seniors for working so hard and giving the season their best.

Howard Cosell, the great sports broadcaster, once said, "The ultimate victory in competition is derived from the inner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your best and that you have gotten the most out of what you had to give." When I read this quote this week, it reminded me of our students here at SHHS. We have so many students who embody the essence of this quote; from members of our drill team to our wrestlers, our artists, scholars, and basketball players all seem to strive to give their best. It has been quite gratifying to witness our students, to borrow from the ideas of Cosell's quote, getting the most out of what they have to give whether it be on the dance floor or the wrestling mat, the hard court or the canvas. Because watching our students give their studies, projects, competitions, and performances their all, is an inspiring and awesome thing to behold.

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Drill: We are very proud of our drill team. They won the 4A Sportsmanship of the Year Award at the state competition last Friday at the UCCU Center on the campus of Utah Valley University; Coach Emilee Stokes commented that their performances were the best they've been all season long. Their performances of their military, dance, and kick routines were awesome! We're proud of our drill team and the classy way they represent SHHS!

SHHS Wrestling: Our wrestling team had a great showing at the divisional tournament that was held at Roy HS last week. We had 12 wrestlers  qualify for the state tournament which will be this Wednesday and Thursday at the UCCU Center on the campus of Utah Valley University. Congratulations and best of luck in the State Art Show!

SHHS Girls' Basketball: The girls clinched at least a share of the region title by winning their senior game last Friday night against Wasatch HS, and the seniors, Ashlyn Bradley, Hailee Hodgson, Dacia Johnson, Daleen Lundquist, Tiffany Madsen,  and Abbie Tuttle, celebrated the feat, with their teammates and coaches, by cutting down the nets. We have a couple of great options for students who would like to prepare for this upcoming ACT on March 3rd.  The first is our ACT Prep Class, taught the last two Saturdays in February from 8:00am until 12:00, the cost is $50.  The other option is on Line using Shmoop, no I don't know how they came up with that name but Shmoop is an online test prep site that has shown very good results in increasing our students ACT scores.  The state of Utah has purchased rights for every student in the state to use this resource, so the best news is that it is free.

"I've been booed off the field, and I've been carried off the field by people cheering me. So I've seen both ends of it, and I can tell you the bad side of it gets a lot more attention than the good side does, but the good side is pretty darned good when it's on your side." -- Tom Glavine

It's been a pleasure associating with our students, faculty, staff,  parents, and fans at our various SHHS sporting events and activities. I admire the way our educational community conducts itself with the class and sportsmanship that it does. We do a great job, as it states in our Skyhawk Code of Conduct, "pursuing victory with honor." Our students are enthusiastic and supportive of their competing and participating peers and do a great job creating an atmosphere full of that "good side" that hall-of-fame pitcher Tom Glavine was talking about, and I'm proud to be a part of that.

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Welding: On Saturday, January 24, our school hosted the region welding competition, and SHHS senior Hayden Boardman took 1st place in the individual competition. Hayden was one of four members on the SHHS welding team; other team members included Kien Marvin, Coulter Johnson, and Sam Evans. Though they didn't win the team competition, they produced quality welds that demonstrated the skills they've developed here as students. Good job guys, and congratulations Hayden!

SHHS Wrestling: Our SHHS wrestling team took 7th place out of 36 teams who competed in the Pineview tournament last weekend. Jacob Armstrong took 1st place in his weight division and was selected the "Outstanding Wrestler" of the tournament. Jaxon VanTassel and Jaxon Bowden each finished in 2nd place for their respective divisions; Bryton Shepherd and Kyle Larsen finished in 3rd; and rounding out the top finishers from the school were Brennen Gerratt and Brigham Hughes who each took their weight divisions 7th spot. The team will next compete in divisional competition which will be held at Roy HS on February 4 and 5.

SHHS Skyhawks (Students) of the Month: This month it was the business and marketing/family and consumer sciences departments' turn to select students who embody exceptional student conduct and character as Skyhawks (students) of the Month, and this month's winners include Hayden Henrie nominated by Mrs. Reynaud, Dairadee Reynolds nominated by Mrs. Johnson, Cooper Smith nominated by Mr. Clark, Karly Neves nominated by Ms. Cox, Challis Morgenson nominated by Mrs. Hansen, and Quinton MacCabe nominated by the student council. Congratulations to these students for representing our school so well and being the leaders they are!

SHHS FCCLA Competition: On Tuesday (1/27) twenty-five members of the FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) Chapter competed at the Region Convention in 14 different STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Events.  All 25 members qualified to attend the State FCCLA Competition in March.  Each participant was awarded either a Gold, Silver, or Bronze Ribbon reflecting the scores given by a set of judges.  Overall medal awards for our members included 5 Gold Medals, 10 Silver Medals, and 10 Bronze Medals.  Congratulations to the gold medal winners: Danna Wilson, Kelcee Davis, and McKennah Scott in the Interpersonal Communications Event and Ashley Taylor and Olivia Trent in the Sport Nutrition Event.

SHHS Girls' Basketball: The girls had an outstanding victory against Timpview HS last Friday night at Timpview HS; the win places the team in a tie for 1st in region. They followed that win up with a solid 67-42 point win over Provo HS this week (1/27). The team is really playing well and positioning themselves for a favorable seeding in the state tournament. They will next play at Spanish Fork HS on Friday night (1/30).

SHHS Boys' Basketball: The boys' basketball team played in an "old fashioned barn burner" against Provo HS on Tuesday night. The game was tightly contested the whole night, and a late three-point shot by Jeff DeGraffenreid tied the game at 64-64. Provo, however, made a three-point shot of their own to clinch the win at 67-64. National Champion Coach Urban Meyer was in attendance to watch Porter Gustin play, and Porter played very well scoring 28 points. Jeff DeGraffenreid also played great adding 24 points. Next up for our Skyhawks will be Spanish Fork HS at their school on Friday night (1/30).

"Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it."

-- Greg Anderson

We've come to the halfway point of the year, and now is a good time to reflect on the first half of the year and to evaluate how things have gone here at SHHS. I'm sure we've (students, parents, teachers, and community members) experienced varying degrees of success and failure so far, and I'm sure we've had some really good times and maybe some not so good times as well. As we transition into the second half of this school year, let's recommit to being "Positive in the Present" and making the most of every opportunity we have here at SHHS. I look forward to what the second half of this school year holds in store for all of us associated with this great school; let's find joy and satisfaction in helping our students do and participate in their various studies and activities as well as finishing them.

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS DECA: Our students who competed in the Southern Region Competition for DECA did very well. Rylan Christensen and Sierra Draper placed 2nd in Sports and Entertainment Marketing, which was a team event. In the Product Service Marketing event, James Ebert took third place. Congratulations to these students for their accomplishment!

SHHS Drill Team: The drill team had a great performance on Friday night at halftime of the girls' basketball game. They have been working hard in preparation for their region competition next Thursday, January 29, at Maple Mountain HS. Come out and cheer them on as they compete for the region championship!

SHHS Wrestling: Last week the boys wrestled some very tough competition. After wrestling the top ranked team in the state the week before in Wasatch HS, our boys followed that up by facing the number three ranked team in the state: Maple Mountain HS. They wrestled and competed tough, but came up a bit short on points needed to win. Our team also competed in the Rocky Mountain Rumble at UVU last weekend where Jacob Armstrong, who has committed to wrestle at Nebraska next year, faced the sixth ranked wrestler nationally from Pocatello, Idaho for the championship of his weight class; though he finished 2nd, Jacob had a great tournament!

SHHS Cheer: Last Saturday (1/17) our cheer team competed in the southern regional cheer competition which was held here at our school. Over 20 teams were here to compete, and our girls took first in the 4A division again this year. The accomplishment was quite remarkable in and of itself but that they did it after one of their team members suffered a significant tendon injury during the week made it even more so. The team rallied around their injured teammate and performed great demonstrating talent and heart! They will next compete in the state competition on January 31 at Salt Lake Community College, and on February 13 they will travel to participate in the West Coast Championship in Anaheim, California. Great job, and good luck ladies!

SHHS Girls' Basketball: Last Friday night the girls got another big region win over the defending state champions, Springville HS. The game was close at half, but the ladies pulled away in the 4th quarter for a 48-37 point victory. Our girls will next play the Timpview Thunderbirds on Friday (1/23) night at 5:15 PM at Timpview HS.

SHHS Boys' Basketball: The boys also got a win against the Red Devils last Friday night. After a hard-fought, low-scoring first quarter and half, the boys pulled away for a 43-29 point win. The boys will also play the Thunderbirds on Friday (1/23) night at Timpview HS at 7:00 PM following the girls' game.

Skyhawk Happenings:

  • Grades for 2nd term were posted on January 22.
  • On January 29 the HOSA club will be sponsoring a school blood drive. Students can sign up to donate blood in Mrs. Lyman's room (E203) or during lunch on January 27.
  • The Senior Dinner Dance will held this Saturday, January 24, beginning with dinner at 6:00 PM. This year's senior dinner/dance is not a date dinner/dance.  It will be a true masquerade; however, students are not required to dress in masquerade attire. Tucanos will be catering the dinner.  This masquerade should be a night of merry memory making for our seniors and future graduates.
  • On February 5 selected seniors from our school will be participating in the NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) Test. Seniors have been contacted and the test will be in the library. This test is given to formulate a national report card for how our students and schools are performing academically.
  • The SHHS Choirs will have professional portraits taken on Friday, February 6 for Men's Camerata, Singers, and Women's Chorale; and Monday, February 9 for Serendipity and Concert Choir. • Ammon Clark continues to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House by collecting pop tabs from soda cans. We can help Ammon in his collection efforts by bringing our pop tabs to the school and turning them into the front office, the counseling office, and (or) Mrs. Wilder's room.

SHHS Weekly Newsletter 16

“You’re not obligated to win. You’re obligated to keep trying. To the best you can do everyday. ”

 -- Jason Mraz

It's been a few weeks since I sent out our last newsletter, and since that time, a lot of things have happened with and for our students. It's been a pleasure to watch them participate in their education and extracurricular activities the way they do. Though they don't win or have supreme success each time they participate in their activities, they compete, work, and try to be their best. It's a pleasure to watch them give their best, and I look forward to watching them compete throughout the rest of the school year.

Skyhawk Highlights:

U.S. Army All-American Bowl: On January 3, Porter Gustin, a senior here at Salem Hills High School, participated in the annual U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, and he represented our school and community very well. He was named the defensive MVP as the West defeated the East 39-36 in an exciting game; Porter earned the game's defensive MVP honor for intercepting a pass and running it in for a touchdown, getting a key sack in the 4th quarter, and securing an onsides kick. Congratulations Porter!

SHHS Drill Team: The drill team participated in a competition at Corner Canyon HS on Saturday (1/10). The ladies performed very well. They finished the competition placing 2nd in kick routine, 4th in hip hop, 4th in military, and 5th in dance. They will next compete in the region drill competition at Maple Mountain HS on January 29; their state competition will be on February 6 at UVU. Come and support our awesome drill team!  They've put a lot of time and practice into the precision of their routines, and their performances are great!

SHHS All-State Selections: The Salt Lake Tribune recently honored a number of Salem Hills High School students as all-state football players. Senior Tyler Christensen was selected as a first team all-state offensive lineman, Senior Porter Gustin was also named to the all-state first team as a linebacker. Senior Jordan Taylor was named second team all-state as a defensive back, and sophomore Vili Wolfgramm was given honorable mention for his play as a linebacker. Congratulations guys!

*Academic All-State winners were mentioned in a previous newsletter, and McKenzi Hancock was not mentioned at that time; however, we would certainly like to recognize and congratulate her for receiving that honor in girls tennis. Congratulations McKenzi!

SHHS Wrestling: Our wrestling team had a hard-fought match with Wasatch last Thursday night (1/8), and they came up a bit short on points needed to win the match. The team, however, wrestled well and each individual really competed hard. At the Iron Town Duals in Cedar City over the weekend (1/9-1/10) the wrestling team took 1st place and had six 1st place undefeated wrestlers: Austin Davis, Kyle Larsen, Jaxon Van Tassell, Brennen Gerratt, Jacob Armstrong, and Jaxon Bowden.  Great job wrestlers!

SHHS Cheer: This Saturday, January 17, our school will be hosting the Southern Regional Cheer Competition at 10:00 AM. Come and support our awesome cheer team as they compete to advance to the state competition on January 31. They perform with a lot of energy and excitement and are really fun to watch. They've worked hard on their routines, and their performances show it.

SHHS Girls Basketball: The lady Skyhawks pushed their record to 12-2 over the break and last week starting with a loss to Timpview HS (54-41) but wins over Provo HS (67-22), Spanish Fork HS (63-46), and Maple Mountain HS (58-35). They played Wasatch HS Tuesday night (1/14) in a thrilling overtime game, getting the win by a score of 66-62. Next up for the girls will be the Springvile Red Devils on Friday evening.

SHHS Boys Basketball: The boys competed in the KSA Orlando Tournament just before the break and won two of three games, their loss coming in the championship of their pool. Over the break and last week, they had losses to Bingham HS (67-48) and Spanish Fork HS (61-52) before bouncing back with a good win against Maple Mountain HS (53-43) on Friday night (1/9). The boys  played at Wasatch HS on Tuesday night as well. They competed well, but fell to the Wasps by a score of 60-52. They next play Springville HS here on Friday night.

SHHS Dance Company: Last week the SHHS Dance Company performed their Emotions show on Wednesday and Thursday night. The show's performers and its choreography captured and interpreted the emotions we all experience very well. Our students' expression through dance and their talent to dance was awesome; the time and effort they spent practicing and preparing for the show were certainly evident.

Nebo School District's Captain's Academy: On Thursday, January 8, students from SHHS participated in the winter sports Captain's Academy held at the Nebo School District's boardroom. Participants were selected by their coaches and advisors to represent their respective teams and groups. At the academy, SHHS students interacted with other captains from around the district's schools and were treated to the key note address from Coach Roger Reid. Abbie Tuttle (girls basketball), Megan Rittmanic (swim), Connor Peterson (swim), Nick Trotter (band), Maddie Jones (drill), Isaac Parrish (wrestling), Jeff DeGraffenried (boys basketball), and Hayden Albrecht (student council) did a great job representing our school.

Skyhawk Happenings:

  • It's time to enroll in spring concurrent enrollment courses through UVU for those that need to. Dates to remember: January 21 is the last day to complete UVU admission; the last day to submit prerequisite test scores to the CE office; the last day to submit "Sophomore by Exception Application" to the CE office. January 23 is the last day to complete course signup; is the day tuition is due ($5/credit). February 13 is the last day to drop concurrent enrollment classes without a 'W'.
  • Again this year we are encouraging our sophomore students (only sophomores are eligible) to apply for the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Conference. To apply, students must submit a 400-500 word response to the following questions: What defines a great leader? How are you a great leader? What leadership roles have you fulfilled and are presently fulfilling? Responses are due to Mr. Gillie in room D200 by January 15, 2015. Two winners from the school, preferably a boy and a girl, will participate in the conference held at Aspen Grove up Provo Canyon from May 7 to May 9; all expenses will be covered. The conference will focus on developing leadership skills and instruction on how students can make a positive difference. If you have questions regarding this conference opportunity, talk to Coach Gillie.
