  Last Wednesday, around 65 Salem Hills High School students and staff participated in the blood drive sponsored by the school’s HOSA club.  The HOSA club (Health Occupation Students of America) gives students the opportunities to explore their interests in the medical field. Contributing their time and effort to the blood drive shows the students’ desire to pursue their interests in health care careers. MountainStar Services came to the school to draw blood from eager individuals.  The blood stays in the state and will be distributed to 7 hospitals in the area. One blood donation can be used to save three lives. The blood drive at the high school will supply blood to approximately 195 patients.  The HOSA club would like to express appreciation to the student body and their willingness to donate.

By: J.T. Atkinson and Jake Durfey This year’s Salem Hills High School wrestling team has the bar set high after last year’s second place finish in their region. Salem Hills has made the move to 4A and is placed in region 8. It consists of the schools:  Payson, Spanish Fork, Springville, and Maple Mountain; which makes it a very tough region to compete in. Despite the challenge of competing with more experienced schools, the Salem Hills wrestling team has been working hard, and is coming into this year’s season with their chins held high, confident, and ready to compete.                  They had their first match on December 3rd which was against the Timpanogos Timberwolves. With victories from Chase Wilson(103), Craig Findlay(130), Mckayd Gordon(135), Jake Jensen(152), Phil Sorensen(189), Mason Morganson(215), and Derek Mangelson(HWT) the Skyhawks came out victorious in a BLANK-BLANK win.                 Last Friday the Skyhawks faced the Juab Wasps who are ranked third in state for 3A. With the Skyhawks forfeiting only 1 weight, they overcame the Wasps in a 57-24 victory.                 “We went in there knowing that Juab was a good team. But we also knew that we were a good team and that we wouldn’t go down without a fight.” –Phil Sorensen

SHHS Welcomes Eric Woodhouse as New Assistant Principal

Eric Woodhouse was born in Idaho Falls, and is the new assistant principal at Salem Hills High School. He is the third assistant principal in a school that has been standing for less than two years.  He is a pretty interesting man; he has ran 5 marathons, and loved to play basketball growing up. A couple other hobbies that he enjoys these days are snowboarding, fishing, and he still enjoys playing basketball. He has four children, three girls, and one boy. He is working towards his Master’s Degree in Education of administration at Brigham Young University, and says that one day he wants to become a principal. He loves to watch movies; a couple of his favorites are Transporter, Dead Poet Society, and Dumb and Dumber. His favorite food is Pizza. He does not like candy bars that much, but says that he is a bigger fan of foods more like ice cream…And his favorite drink is coke. This was a brief look into the life of the Salem Hills High School’s new assistant principal; the students are looking forward to getting to know him.

Salem vs Orem Boys Basketball

By: Kjirsten Collins                 In their first home basketball game of the 2009 season, the Skyhawks put up a great fight against the Orem Tigers. Salem Hills was in the lead for most of the game, until the Tigers altered their strategy in the fourth quarter. This brought them to a tie, with only five minutes left in the game.  The Skyhawks managed to come back, but then Orem took the lead again, and those five minutes were neck and neck between the teams. With less than a minute left, the Tigers made four foul shots, which brought them a win in the end, the score being 44 to 49.

Music Man at SHHS

                  The Salem Hills High School drama department earned a reputation of excellence last year, after they put on their first performances in the first year of the school. After the first play of the 2009- 2010 school year, would they keep that status? The answer, after the outstanding performance of The Music Man, is absolutely.  Directed and choreographed by Polly K. Dunn, along with music director Justin Bills, the musical turned out to be quite the show. A perfect mix of humor and character, the cast members easily caught the attention of the audience throughout the play.  Another notable aspect of the show was the live orchestra of Salem Hills. They played flawlessly and set the mood of each scene with their flowing notes. A mention must also be made of the leads, Kyler Gilstrap and Celeste Lee. Both amazing singers and performers, they did a terrific job of stirring the emotions of the audience. Behind the scenes, it was evident that the costume and set departments succeeded in capturing the setting for the play. Overall, The Music Man was completely worth going to, and the fine arts department of SHHS has again impressed the community.

Salem Hills Continues the Wishing Tradition

Last year Salem Hills High School started a new tradition; they got involved with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This year we granted Porter’s wish. Porter is a nine year old boy who lived in Salem, but recently moved to California. He has Muscular Dystrophy and his wish is to go to Disneyworld. The week started off with an assembly to introduce Porter. Throughout the week the school got caught up in doing all of Porter's favorite things; we dressed up in Disney costumes, ate Snickers, wore red, and brought stuffed animals to school. We carried on the same traditions as last year and sold Porter dog tags, had a movie night, the Man-hawk Dance Off, and the Skyhawk Gorge. The Skyhawk Gorge is when businesses from all around the community and school clubs bring food to the school for families and students to come eat, enjoy entertainment, socialize, and have a good time. It's something the whole community enjoys. After the Skyhawk Gorge on Monday night we had raised more than enough money to grant Porter's wish, over $8,000 dollars. The Make-A-Wish Foundation isn't only a good way to get a whole school united, it is a great way to get the whole community involved and brought together for a good cause.

Manhawk Dance-off Fundraiser

Among many of the events going on for the Make A Wish week, the Manhawk Dance Off always goes down as one of the favorites. Four groups competed in the dance off, but only one could be given the trophy this year. The group Cinnamon Sugar coached by Kacie Hiatt came out on top after everything was done.  “It was 100 percent heart. We danced for more than ourselves that night; we danced for 1) Porter, 2) Micheal Jackson, and 3) For the impoverished children in Africa, namely Ghana. Cinnamon Sugar would like to thank their instructor and choreographer Kacie W. Hiatt. We deserved that victory.” Said Jaxon Munns from the Cinnamon Sugar crew. But unlike last year, all the dances were  well prepared, and one could tell the coaches and performers actually put some time and thought into these creative dances. There were four groups performing in this year’s dance off; Cinnamon Sugar coached by Kacie Hiatt, Neon Black Crew coached by Erin Mcmurray and Rachel Fitzgerald, Sub Zero coached by Kari Turner, and BADA’s coached by Sierra Poulsen. With a total of 1200 dollars raised for the make a wish foundation, the Manhawk Dance Off was an absolute success.

A Wish Came True...

Only a year has passed since Salem Hills’ ’09 Student Council first introduced Sarah Prince to the student body, and issued the challenge of uniting as a school to raise the funds needed to grant her wish through the Make-A-Wish program. Sarah’s speech that day touched each heart as she explained her condition-the tumor in her brain- and the long, exhausting process done to help reduce the tumor. She told the school about her love for reading, specifically her love for Jane Austin’s books. Sarah wished to visit England, particularly the area where the stories she loved took place. Her mother, Rose, stood by Sarah’s side as she struggled to speak to such a large, yet supportive group of peers. Over the next few weeks, Salem Hills High School and the Salem community donated generously. They raised enough for Sarah’s trip, and were able to contribute to another child’s wish. However, Sarah didn’t just get her trip; she made friends.  The support the Skyhawks gave, the love they showed, and the hellos and hugs in the halls meant the world to this young girl. She became a little sister to many. Seeing her sweet smile made everyone’s day better.   The Skyhawks wanted her to be happy and to feel safe. 

Salem Hills has another opportunity to grant a child’s wish in the next few weeks. His name is Porter. He wants to go to Disneyworld. Salem’s Student Council has carefully planned out the events and activities that will get the community involved in changing his life. They will incorporate his likes, and personalize each day entirely for him. Just like with Sarah, having him feel the love and support that only they can give will make his life easier, and his wish can come true.

Salem Hills Secures Spot in Playoffs

Salem Hills secured their spot in the 2009 playoffs by winning Payson 29-22 Friday Night.

Things didn't look good for the Skyhawks as they fumbled deep in their own territory in the first quarter. Payson capitalized on the turn over and scored a touchdown.

Salem Hills didn't roll over and give up. They had a great march down the field that was finished off by a 1 yard TD run by Phil Sorensen.

The next score of the game came when Josh Adams kept the ball on a quarter back option and scampered 56 yards for a touchdown to put the Shyhawks up 14-7 at the half.

The Shyhawks started the 2nd half where they left off as Josh Adams connected with Josh Fifita for a 22 yard touchdown reception.

Payson, however, wasn't ready to go home yet. They scored 15 unanswered points, and with five minutes to go in the game they took the lead 22-21 over the Shyhawks.

On the ensuing kick off the Skyhawks put together a drive that was capped off by a 24 yard TD pass from Josh Adams to Josh Warr in the corner of the endzone. This proved to be the game-winning pass as the final score was 29-22 for the Skyhawks, thus securing a spot in the 2009 4-A playoffs.
