SHHS Drama Department does it again! Shakespeare’s Feast took place on September 23-25th and it was a great success. The crowd was spoiled with a 3-course dinner, scenes from Shakespeare, period music, and riotous games. As usual, Jan Hunsaker’s merry band of actors, actresses, dancers, and musicians created another time and delighted the audience with humor and drama. We are proud of our award-winning drama program at SHHS. Check out the pictures of the fun!

Comings and Goings

We have some amazing new faculty and staff here at Salem Hills High this year. We are so excited about the work they are doing to help students, and we want to introduce them to you.

Curtis Burton

When asked to introduce himself, our new assistant principal wrote, “My name is Curtis Burton. I taught English for 13 years before I became an administrator. I attended the Super Bowl in which Russell Wilson threw the interception at the end of the game and the Seahawks tragically lost to the Patriots, and I had tickets on the second row for the game. I'm excited to be back at Salem Hills, where my administrative experience began. This school has an amazing culture of acceptance and celebration of one another's successes. I'm excited to be here with my kids, two of whom are Skyhawks this year.”

Ryan Magoffin

Ryan Magoffin is our new leadership principles teacher.  When asked to describe his previous experience, he states, “I did my undergraduate work at UVU in Exercise Science and my graduate work at BYU in Exercise Physiology.  While at BYU, I spent several years as a strength and conditioning coach in the athletic department and taught undergrad classes in the physical education department.  Eventually, I ventured into the private sector in a sales position, but immediately realized I needed to get back to coaching and teaching in some form or fashion.  Over the next couple of years, I started coaching cross country and basketball in Nebo School District and eventually was hired to teach leadership principles at Salem Hills High School.  I'm ecstatic to be teaching and coaching at Salem Hills High School.”

You may not know that this past summer, Mr. Magoffin and his wife were pulled into a 70's dance production on a cruise ship at the last minute.  He says, “I didn't know how to dance, but I don't think I made a fool of myself, so that is something to be thankful for.” When asked about his plans for this year, Mr. Magoffin says, “As always, the students are the reason for teaching.  Each one of them is capable of so much good, and I love seeing them live up to that potential.” His first impressions of our school are that the administration really cares about the students and teachers.  “I have felt supported and the school has so many resources to support the students as well.”  He finished his interview with our well-known cry, “GOOOO SKYHAWKS!!!!!”

Chris Killpack

Chris Killpack is our new administrative Intern. He will be helping the administration team until the end of November this year. He enjoyed several years assisting students at Springville High Cornerstone as an educational technician. He obtained his special education teaching certification from B.Y.U. and taught 5th and 6th-grade students with behavior challenges at East Meadows Elementary. He is currently a Nebo District specialist in the special education department, completing his master’s degree in educational leadership at SUU. He enjoys playing soccer and softball as well as the occasional round of "Magic: The Gathering" for any of those Wizards of the Coast aficionados out there.  When asked about his feelings about SHHS, he says, “I am so excited to get to know the amazing faculty and students at Salem Hills. I love the ‘One of Us’ motto and look forward to seeing the vision of bringing together a diverse body of students into one cohesive whole. I appreciate how friendly students are to me and each other as they traverse the halls between instructional times. It is also very encouraging to see faculty members so passionate about empowering students and supporting one another. Even though I graduated from Springville High many years ago, I will be cheering the SHHS Skyhawks to their multiple state victories this year.”

Rachel White

We have two new counselors at SHHS this year. One of them is Rachel White. Rachel comes to us from Payson Junior High after being there for six years. She loves mystery books, her family, her dog, and the University of Utah. She is excited to work with the students as they complete their graduation requirements and decide what they want to do with the next phase of their life. Her first impressions of our school are that the students seem driven to succeed and the school is immaculate.

JR Brandon

Our other new counselor is JR Brandon. His experience includes teaching resource English, math and history, and he has worked at Spanish Fork Junior High, Salem Junior High, Spanish Fork High, and now Salem Hills.  He says, “I'm looking forward to working with students individually and helping them prepare for life after graduation. My first impression of the school, and community, in general, has been that everyone is motivated to make the most of the abilities and opportunities they have been given. There are a lot of talented, intelligent, and unique students that are fun to be around.”

Joshua Bravo

Joshua Bravo is our new Spanish 1 and 2, Latinos In Action, and esports-club advisor. When asked where he comes from Mr. Bravo says, “I moved around a few times, so I say I am from Washington (state).   I attended BYU-Idaho, then two weeks after graduating, I started teaching at the Murray School District.  This is my sixth year of teaching. He loves to watch sports, including esports.  His favorite teams are Seattle Seahawks, Lakers, and Cloud 9 (esports). He looks forward to working with the foreign language department. He says, “Mr. Macdonald has been great at helping me get adjusted and has taught me how to play Rook like a champ.” When asked about his impressions of our school, he states, “There's just something awesome about Salem Hills High.  I know that's vague, but that was the first thought that came to mind. Go Skyhawks!”

Keir Scoubes

Our new photography teacher is Keir Scoubes. He has taught in Nebo School District for 15 years at Larsen Elementary School, where he taught 4th, 5th and 6th grades. He also worked as a U.S. Diplomat for the state department in an American embassy overseas. When asked what he is looking forward to for this year, he states, “I am looking forward to helping others catch Skyhawk Spirit!! This school truly is a community. You can feel the effects of #oneofus!!” Mr. Scoubes has four kids and is a proud grandpa of one.  Mr. Scoubes is passionate about photography and has already begun to contribute amazing photographs of our students in all aspects of SHHS participation. Check out the cover photo on the Facebook page.
