On January 25th, 2018 as part of his 2018 State of the State message, Governor Gary Herbert declared 2018 the Year of Technical Education, naming it his second-highest legislative priority. Edson Barton, president and CEO of  Precision Exams, the Utah-based business that administers career and technical education [CTE] exams and certifications across Utah schools. “The better we help students see how the skills they learn in a CTE class can lead to an exciting career, the more motivated they are to learn and the more likely they are to connect with businesses that really need people with these skills to help their organizations grow.”

Teachers, students, parents, local government officials, district personnel, businesses, technical schools and colleges gathered together at the MTECH for a Career and Technical Education (CTE) night on Monday, August 24th! All content areas demonstrated or highlighted a variety of aspects dealing with their content area. Participants learned about educational and future career opportunities that are available through the Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. Participants also enjoyed hands on activities, such as suturing, CPR practice, cosmetology hair design, woodworking, coding, child care small motor skills, culinary arts, fashion designing and many more. Thanks to the SHHS students who helped with this event.

If food is being served at SHHS and it’s delicious, ProStart’s probably involved. Being asked to be a faculty judge for ProStart Competitions is one of the best deals at our school.

The ProStart course offered at Salem Hills is designed to train students for career opportunities in the Food Service/Culinary Arts and the Hospitality Management Industry. Students learn to use and maintain commercial food service equipment, perform quantity food preparation, and establish their own food service business. Students are required to wear chef coats/ professional restaurant staff dress every day. Students will take the Manager ServeSafe test next term, which qualifies them to manage a restaurant for up to 3 years.

Upcoming ProStart highlights include:

- Creating a meal of the month for FCCLA- once a month all club members (usually 50-60) are invited to eat a meal catered by ProStart.

- Catering Teacher Cafe- Once a month a class restaurant will be available to teachers during lunch. The menus are planned by the students.

- Competing with other schools on the Competition Team- Groups will compete 2nd semester in Regional competition. We are hoping to make it to State competition again this year. Last year was the first time we made it to state.

- Creating a special "Skyhawk Treat" for the big tailgate party next weekend.
