Mr. Thompson recently received an e-mail. It was different than his others though, this was about winning the Teacher of the Year award. It starts off with teachers nominating each other and then as they get deeper they have a poll of teachers that people can select and then they choose. Mr. Thompson came out on top. Thompson teaches mostly psychology classes and is also the coach for the track team. He felt honored that he was chosen but at the same time just keeps on doing what he is doing. No wonder he was picked.

DECA is an association of marketing students. Salem Hills High School’s chapter has about 7 active members with a handful of alternates. March 3-4 was the state competition, and Salem did respectively well. We had our own Brian Miller and Logan Bennet win third place in Business Law and Ethics. Brian Miller also won an award for his high test score. The rest of the members competed, did their best and had a blast! Logan and Brian are now eligible for Nationals, which is being held in Orlando Florida this year! Nationals will take place on the end of April. Salem Skyhawks are proud of their DECA members’ accomplishments.

Amanda Smith (Junior) was one of 2 SHHS students chosen out of 50 for a spot in the Utah State art show (the other is Mckell Flick). Her entry was an acrylic painting in black and white of a girl. It is titled “boredom”. Amanda got this inspiration for this painting by a picture she had taken of a good friend of hers. “The picture showed great expression” Amanda said. When asked what her motivation was, Amanda said that Ms. Shuler was very encouraging of her work and persuaded her to enter the art show. When asked about how she felt about her art work being selected Amanda humbly stated “I’m just happy I did good at something I like to do.”

Wrestling 2010-2011

The Salem hills high school wrestling team topped off their season by placing four people in the top six at the state tournament. Derek mangleson 2nd, Dallin Gividen 4th Craig Finelay 6th and Chase Wilson 6th Prior to this year, the Skyhawks had only placed four people in state in there first two years of existence. “Placing four at state this year was a great accomplishment for the team.” Said head coach TJ Brindly. Since the team was consecutively ranked in the top ten in the state it was not easy to do so. “Region eight is a really tough region for wrestling,” said senior 171 pounder J.T. Atkinson. Payson, Maple Mountain, Springville, and Uintah all have strong wrestling programs. The team did well to get a leg up in region despite the difficulty. Although Graduating 16 seniors will be a hard hit to take, next year the underclassmen as well as coach Brindly are optimistic for next year. “We have one of the best JV teams in the state,” said Brindly, “ The underclassmen are ready to step up to help make a great team next year.” Along with many new faces next year the wrestling as well as all other Salem sports teams will be a force to be reckoned with in an entirely new region. With a lot of new faces and new teams, fans have a very exciting year to look forward to.

This year the sweetheart’s assembly blew everything out of proportion. The skits and highlight video’s took everyone off guard as all were amazed. The final contestants performed skits that included: a rap dance, a piano rendition of a popular farm song, and animal chase, to name a few. Clips were also shown of girls attempting to milk cows and grabbing cash off the backs of pigs and other farm animals. After all the judging, the winners were finally announced. Heather Bolz was Sweethearts Queen with Ashley Moody as 1st attendant and Malley Ballard as 2nd attendant. A smashing experience for all, the assembly created some fun and served as hype to what the Sweetheart’s dance would really be.
