“I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.”  -- Edward Everett Hale

As first term comes to an end, it's a great time to reflect on all that has transpired over the course of the past few months here at SHHS. We've seen our fall teams and performing groups have tremendous and  historically successful seasons; we've seen students striving to be "positive in the present" and enrich the lives of others by performing random acts of kindness for one another each day; and we've seen our students growing into individuals that are anchored in integrity, empowered to succeed, and focused on the future. These first few months have not been without a few bumps along the way, but the positive learning experiences that occur here far outweigh the bumps. It is my pleasure to work with our students, you, and this community; working with you and our students inspires our faculty and staff, "to do the something that [we] can do."

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Family and Consumer Science Department: The Family and Consumer Science Department at Salem Hills High recently sponsored a five day Fashion Career Related Tour in New York City.  11 students along with Mrs. Laurie Hansen visited the 9/11 Memorial, Empire State Building, New Amsterdam Theatre Backstage, Staten Island Ferry (to view the Statue of Liberty), and Radio City Music Hall, Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and Central Park.  They also received instruction at Essence Magazine, Olah Inc. of New York, Fashion Institute of Technology, Parsons School of Design and Designer Kenneth King.  Students were entertained with a Broadway Show of their choice which included some attending Wicked, Phantom of the Opera and Aladdin.  Of course the trip included many subway rides, late-night cheesecake parties, lots of shopping at Canal Street and Times Square and miles upon miles of walking!  The New York City excursion is an experience for students to learn firsthand about our global economy, diverse cultures in the United States, social skills, personal independence, problem solving, following directions,  and the importance of their current education.

SHHS Cross Country: The teams competed on Wednesday (10/22) afternoon in the state competition at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City. The teams both ran well and represented our school proudly.  On the boys side, RJ Lundberg was 1st Team All-State and took 7th overall!  For the girls, Haley Johnston was the school's top finisher at 13th place.  She also broke SHHS's Cross Country school record.  Congratulations to all our runners on a great season!

SHHS Volleyball: The ladies were dominant against MMHS on Tuesday of last week. They swept the Lady Golden Eagles in three straight games to win the match. They next play Wasatch  HS on Thursday of this week as they continue to make preparations for state competition.

SHHS Boys' Football: The football team won a hard-fought battle with MMHS on Wednesday night of last week; it was a great win for the seniors to get on Senior Night. Their final region game will be this week against rival Spanish Fork HS; the Skyhawks will be looking for their first win against  the Dons in football. Another highlight this week was that our football standout Porter Gustin was honored as an Army All American, a prestigious award that is given to only 90 high school football players in the country each year. Congratulations Porter!

SHHS Band: The band took first this week at the Davis Cup competition at Davis HS. They also took first in visual performance, musical performance, and auxiliary performance. The band will next be performing in Pleasant Grove on Saturday. Congratulations band and good luck Saturday!

 Skyhawk Happenings:

  • The end of first term is this Thursday, October 23. Look for report cards to be delivered next Friday (10/31).
  • The 6th annual Salem Witches 5K Run and Children's Mile hosted by Coach Thompson's cross country and track teams will be this Saturday, October 25. Registration for the event is online at  www.salemwitchesrun.blogspot.com.
  • This year as part of our Veteran's Day Assembly (Nov 11) we want to do a slideshow of our Salem Hills Veterans. We'd like to honor the family members of our students who are veterans of foreign conflicts.  Students or their family members can email photos of their veterans to salemhillsveterans [at] gmail.com (salemhillsveterans[at]gmail[dot]com).  With emailed photos, please include the submitting student's name, the veteran's name, the relationship to the student, and which conflict(s) he/she is a veteran of.  Please submit the photos by November 1 at the latest.
  • We will be participating in Utah College Application Week (UCAP) here at Salem Hills High School this year. There will be a week's worth of activities running from November 10 through 14; the following Monday (11/17) we will be assisting all of our seniors with university, college, and professional schools and program applications.
  • There will be a Career Day here at the school on November 25. Students will have the opportunity to hear from career professionals in their 2nd and 3rd period classes on that date.

  • Detention will be held before school, during lunch, and after school in room C209 with Ms. Houghton.
  • Our administrative team continues to offer detention time after school for students interested in biking, running, lifting weights and doing cross fit. The program is called Double Time, and students can earn double the detention time for participating. This pilot program is based on psychologist  John Ratey's theory that exercise sparks cognitive function and improves academic performance and behavior.
  • Ammon Clark, one of our students here at SHHS,  is raising money for the Ronald McDonald House by collecting pop tabs from soda cans. We can help Ammon in his collection efforts by bringing our pop tabs to the school and turning them into the front office, the counseling office, and (or) Mrs. Wilder's room.

Last week our students participated in the Macy's Lip Dub challenge that was organized by our PTA (a big thank you goes to Angela Rogers and Therese Lauritzen for organizing it so well). The lip dub was performed to the Beach Boys' classic hit "Be True To Your School"; as we wrapped up homecoming week with the lip dub and other activities, I couldn't help but think that the song choice was very apropos. Our students are "true" to this school in so many different ways. We see it in their commitment to their studies; we see it in their efforts on the fields and courts of competition; and we see it in their interaction with their peers. They care about our school community and are proud to show their pride. A source indicated to me that Coach Todd Graham, Arizona State's head football coach who was here Friday night to watch the game, commented on the enthusiasm of our students and patrons. He indicated that he's been all over the country but has rarely seen the kind of enthusiasm displayed by our students and  community. It's cool to hear that people outside our community can see that we are true to our school's values of spirit, heart, honor, and success; it makes me, and should make each one of us, proud to be a Skyhawk!

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Cheer: A huge shout out needs to go to our cheer team for all they did during homecoming week to rally support for all our team sports and activities! In addition to their awesome performances at the games, assemblies, and in the Lip Dub, their homecoming decorating of the commons, football field, and players lockers was creative and really added to the spirit of the week.

SHHS Girl's Tennis: Four girls represented our school at the state tournament held at Liberty Park. Maddi Wanner and Kenzi Hancock represented the school in the singles division, and Amanda Ith and Isabel Brockbank represented the school in the doubles division. Though they didn't make it as far as they would have liked, they competed well.

SHHS Cross Country: Region competition was on Saturday at Timpview HS, and both the boys and girls ran well. The boys took 3rd and the girls finished in 4th.  Both teams qualified for state competition on Oct 22 at Sugarhouse Park.  RJ Lundberg ran great taking 2nd overall for boys, and Hailey Johnston also ran great finishing 4th overall for girls.

SHHS Volleyball: The girls' volleyball team played a great match against Springville HS on Tuesday night. The match went to a game five, and the fifth game was neck and neck all the way down to the end where our Lady Skyhawks were edged out by a final score of 15-13. They next play Maple Mountain HS here on Tuesday, October 14 at 6:30 PM.

SHHS Boys' Football: The team played Springville High in a battle for second place in region Friday night and played spectacularly in front of a boisterous and enthusiastic crowd and visiting ASU coach, Todd Graham, who was here on a recruiting trip. After allowing a touchdown to Springville on their first possession, the Skyhawks held the Red Devils scoreless while scoring 34 points of their own. The team is having their best season in school history, currently holding a record of 7-1. They next play Maple Mountain HS on Wednesday night (10/15) due to the shortened week for fall break.

SHHS Band: Our SHHS Band performed really well and finished 3rd at their competition at BYU on Saturday.  They were pleased with their finish in the 3A division which is a division up from where they have competed previously. The band will next be competing at Davis HS on October 21.

SHHS Student Council: The student council did a tremendous job making homecoming week a huge success. They worked tirelessly throughout the weeks leading up to homecoming week and during homecoming week to plan and carryout activities that involved all students here at SHHS. Our student council does a great job representing our school and their peers.

Skyhawk Happenings:

  • Fall Break  is this week, October 16-19.
  • The end of first term is next Thursday, October 23.
  • For all Athletes needing updated physicals for winter/spring sports, we will be having physicals in the gym at 3:00 PM on October 21. Students must pay $20 to the finance office before getting their physicals done (we can't accept insurance).  If you haven't heard, there are new rules starting this year that require all student athletes to get a new/updated physical prior to tryouts every year. For example, if your athlete received a physical last year for basketball, they will have to get a new one done this year, but if they had one done for a fall sport this year, they are covered until next year.
  • The 6th annual Salem Witches 5K Run and Children's Mile hosted by Coach Thompson's cross country and track teams will be on Saturday, October 25. Registration for the event is online at  www.salemwitchesrun.blogspot.com.

"Homecoming means coming home to what is in your heart." --Author Unknown

This week is homecoming week at SHHS, and the excitement in the school is palpable. Though our school is just six years old, a rich tradition and culture has been established here, and one of the cool things about a young school, and any school for that matter, is that we all get to play a part in the development and dissemination of our school's traditions and culture. So be a part of homecoming week, and come and celebrate the creation and sharing of our school's traditions and culture, not only this week but in the weeks, months, and years to come.

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Girls' Soccer: The girls lost to Springville HS in a nail biter on Tuesday afternoon. The score seesawed back and forth until Springville eventually won the contest 5-4. Their Thursday night game sadly ended with the win going to Wasatch HS by a score of 2-0. Though the scores didn't finish in the favor of the Skyhawks, both games were reminiscent of Coach Lombardi's famous quote: "We didn't lose the game, we just ran out of time." The girls have had a great year, they've played some great soccer, and have represented our school well, and they still have a chance at a play-in game if Spanish Fork HS beats Springville HS today.

SHHS Girl's Tennis: The girls' tennis team did well at their region tournament. Four girls are going to state. Kenzi Hancock and Maddi Wanner are going to state as individual competitors, and Amanda Ith and Isabel Brockbank are going to compete as doubles. The JV team did well at the region JV tournament. There were 120 girls in the tournament, and out of the 17 that competed for SHHS, 13 placed. The future looks great for SHHS Girls' Tennis!

SHHS Cross Country: The team ran well in Park City in their last tune up meet before they run their region meet this Saturday at Kiwanis Park in Provo.

SHHS Volleyball: The girls' volleyball team had a bit of a rough go against Timpview last Tuesday night, losing 3-0; however, as they always seem to do, they rebounded great against Spanish Fork High winning 3 games to 1. They concluded their week of play by placing seventh out of 30 teams at the Bingham Tournament. The girls next face Springville at Springville HS on Tuesday evening at 6:30.

SHHS Boys' Football:  The football team had one of their hardest fought victories to date, rallying late to come from twelve points down in the fourth quarter to beat Orem HS, 27-26. Key defensive plays sparked the come-back win. Next up, the team faces the Springville Red Devils here on Friday night for homecoming.

SHHS Band: The band traveled to Logan last week to participate in a competition at USU. They continue to improve as young band members get more and more experience in competition. They next travel to Herriman to compete on Tuesday evening.

SHHS Student Body  Officers: The high school underwent a complete transformation over the weekend, and everything has been transformed into various games one might find in a classic arcade. Pac-Man, Mario, and even a few Angry Birds, in addition to several others, have taken up residence in the school, and it is truly an awesome sight to behold. Our SBO's did a fabulous job transforming our school into an arcade for homecoming week.

Skyhawk Happenings:

  • Homecoming week began yesterday and runs through Friday (October 10), and there are  several great events planned for the week. There will be a movie night on Tuesday at 7:00 PM in the auditorium.  The annual Skyhawk Rally will be on Wednesday at 7:00 PM on the football field.  On Thursday at 4:00 PM there will be Powder Puff games on the football field. On Friday after the morning assembly, the school will be creating and competing in the Macy's Lip Dub, which has been very well organized by our local PTA; the song we will be performing is "Be True to Your School" by the Beach Boys. The homecoming game on Friday evening is against Springville HS at 7:00 PM.  Finally, the week's activities will conclude on Saturday evening with the Homecoming dance; the dance will run from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. The Theme of the dance is Hero; admission is $20 a couple.  Pictures will be $15 per couple and $20 per group for those interested.
