Career Programs Highlight-The Phlebotomy Program at Southwest Technical College prepares the student through coursework and practicum to become certified in the National Healthcare Association as a Phlebotomist. Coursework and practicums prepare you to acquire the knowledge and skills to collect blood and other specimens for hospitals, blood banks, and other health care facilities. With successful completion of the program, students are eligible to sit for the Phlebotomy Technician Certification with the National Healthcare Association.

Imagine stepping into the shoes of a forensic DNA analyst, unraveling the genetic code to solve a mystery! In this hands-on lab, the students started by constructing a DNA strand based on a suspect’s genetic traits, carefully matching nitrogenous bases to bring their identity to life. But here’s the challenge—another group will receive your DNA strand and must decode it to determine who your suspect is!

We are thrilled to share the exciting news about our recent visitor to the "Teaching as a Profession" class had a recent visitor, Mr. Ralph Jamsa, who has served as a counselor at both Salem Hills High School and Spanish Fork High School, joined the class for an inspiring session.
Mr. Jamsa brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective. He is passionate about music and demonstrated innovative ways to incorporate music into grade school lessons, making learning both fun and impactful.

This week's Teacher Feature and spotlight is on Mr. Kris Johnson, a cornerstone of excellence at the Advanced Learning Center. Mr. Johnson is renowned for his expertise and dedication, particularly in the realm of criminal justice education. His extensive background includes over 22 years of experience in law enforcement and as a member of the Air Force Reserves, bringing a wealth of real-world knowledge into the classroom.
Next Friday, April 25th, the Educators Rising Club is hosting a Board Game Night at the Advanced Learning Center (ALC). Our College and Career Ready class had a memorable experience yesterday as they attended the Salem City Chamber Meeting, held at the brand new Salem City Fire and EMS station. This event provided a unique learning opportunity for our students to explore potential career paths and engage with community leaders.

We were privileged and honored to host some distinguished guests today from the Candy Bomber Foundation - The Gail Halverson Legacy. Our esteemed visitors included:

Mr. Jim Stewart - Executive Director
General Mike Minihan - CEO/President of the Board of Directors.
These notable individuals toured the Advanced Learning Center, and we were especially honored by the presence of General Minihan, who took the time to speak with several of our classes. His discussion emphasized the critical role that communication plays in enhancing all aspects of life.
We are truly grateful that these influential figures recognized the significance of our institution and chose to spend their valuable time with us. Their visit was a testament to the importance of the work we do here at the ALC.
The Advanced Learning Center's Aviation Department just acquired a new drone!
A brand-new First Person Avata Drone, a state-of-the-art piece of equipment that promises to significantly enhance our Aviation Drones class.
Christian Rigtrup, one of our ALC aviation students, had the opportunity to be the first to test out the new drone in class. Christian's experience was fantastic, allowing him to explore the drone's capabilities and see the world through a new lens. This opportunity represents just one of the many ways our students will benefit from this advanced technology.
The ALC's second public speaking competition was held on March 25th. The sixteen entries (one not pictured) gave outstanding speeches that left the audience and the three judges impressed. In the end, the three winners were: Taden Hansen, who won first place; Leah Miller, who won second place; and Chloe Shock, who took third place honors. Well done, students!
Our engineering class has just wrapped up the chemical engineering section, and it was nothing short of a delightful and educational experience. The highlight of this section was a hands-on activity where students got to dive into the world of culinary engineering by creating the ultimate pancake. Needless to say, the school smelled delightful during those two weeks!
We had the pleasure of hosting and giving a tour to a wonderful group of students from Payson Jr. High today! It is always such a privilege to showcase the incredible opportunities available at the Advanced Learning Center (ALC) to other schools in the Nebo School District. Our facilities and programs are designed to help students get ahead in their future endeavors, and we love sharing these resources with others.
A huge thank you to Payson Jr. High for taking the time to come and tour the ALC. We hope you enjoyed the visit as much as we enjoyed having you!

This week, we are excited to feature Mr. Tom Hawks, who leads our Carpentry 1 & Carpentry 2 Construction classes at the Advanced Learning Center. These courses are designed for students interested in gaining hands-on experience and knowledge in the field of construction. Mr. Hawks brings a wealth of experience and passion to his teaching, ensuring that students are well-prepared for real-world applications in carpentry.
Students in the Advanced Anatomy class, had the incredible opportunity to explore the inner workings of one of the body's most vital organs firsthand. Using cow hearts, students identified key structures such as the atria, ventricles, valves, and major blood vessels, gaining a deeper understanding of how blood flows through the heart.
