Weekly Parent Newsletter 5

Skyhawk Parents,

Edith Wharton, the author of numerous classic tales, profoundly stated, "There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it." We all admire people who shine brightly and influence us with their brilliant character; conversely, we occasionally encounter those whose light is rather dim or, even worse, those who would stifle the brilliance of others out of jealousy or spite. As educators at Salem Hills High School we are striving to encourage our students to shine brightly and to also look for opportunities to help reflect the brilliance they, and we,  see in one another. Let's take the opportunity as an educational community to help our students spread their light in all that they do!

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Boys' Golf: The boys' golf team completed their best season to date, improving by 222 strokes from where they finished last year. They had multiple players shoot in the 70s at tournaments this year. Though they finished just a few strokes out of state competition at Wasatch State Park (the Lake Course) last week, they had a great season, and with four sophomores contributing significantly to the team this year, the future looks bright for the boys' golf team.

SHHS Girls' Soccer: The girls lost to MMHS on Tuesday afternoon, 4-0, but bounced back nicely against SFHS on Thursday winning 5-1. They are in the heat of the playoff hunt and could finish anywhere from 2nd to 4th in the region, depending on their finish. Thursday night will be Senior Night in which the team will honor their seniors: Paige Robbins, Lexi Van Tassel, and Bethany Wride.

SHHS Girl's Tennis: This week the ladies will participate in their region tournament which will be on October 2 and 3 at Springville High School.

SHHS Cross Country: Salem Hills High School and Coach Bart Thompson hosted one of the biggest, if not the biggest,  meets in the state last Friday night. 37 teams from around the state participated in the event. The boys' team finished in 12th place and the girls' finished in 13th place which they were pleased with considering the caliber of competition they faced.

SHHS Volleyball: The girls' volleyball team is currently in second place in region and has a match against Timpview HS on Tuesday (9/30) night this week for the region's top spot. The game will be a blue-out game for the supporting crowd, so don your blue apparel and come support the team Tuesday night.

SHHS Boys' Football:  The football team had another strong performance last week against Provo HS. They won their game by a score of 42-7. They look to keep their two-game winning streak alive against Orem HS on Thursday night; the game will be played at Orem HS.

SHHS Band: Our band participated in the Nebo Tournament of Bands in Payson on Saturday. Though they didn't win the accolades they were hoping for, their performance was great and they represented the school well, even though they had to play through a lot of rain and  even a lightning delay.
