SHHS Weekly Newsletter 6

Submitted by curtis.burton on

Having attended both the state golf tournament this week and state tennis matches, I was impressed with the dignity with which our students and coaches competed. In sports where it's easy to "lose your cool" and visibly show one's frustration, our Skyhawks did a great job pursuing victory with honor.  As the great Roman Emperor and stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius stated long ago, "There is a proper dignity and proportion to be observed in the performance of every act of life." For these students, this week, it was their performance on the course and courts where their dignity was on display, and it shone through brilliantly. It was a great reminder to me of how we should strive to perform with dignity.

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Boys Golf: Our boys golf team played great at state which was held at the Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway. They just missed the final day cut but competed well in the team competition with Brock Nielsen shooting even par and Steven Barton scoring just one stroke over par. In the individual competition, both Brock and Steven shot low scores the final day with Brock scoring a 75 and Steven a 77; both narrowly missed making the all-state team. Congratulations to the SHHS golf team and Coach Fillmore for their first appearance as a team at state in 4A: Carson Hill, Mason Bigler, Kaleb DeGraffenreid, Jayden Parkinson, Steven Barton, and Brock Nielsen.

SHHS Girls Tennis: The team had a good showing at the region tournament last week in Spanish Fork and the state tournament yesterday. Amanda Ith took 2nd in region.  Maddi Wanner and Isabel Brockbank placed 4th, and Alexi Olson, Amanda Wilcox, Aubree Beckstrand, and Hannah Jeffrey placed 5th. Amanda Ith, Maddi Wanner, and Isabel Brockbank qualified to go to state at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City, and at the state tournament they competed well. Of the three, Amanda Ith advanced to the 2nd round (an accomplishment that only about seven other girls form SHHS have achieved) after winning a 3 hour and 30 minute match. Congratulations to these state qualifiers, and congratulations to Alexi Olson for being selected as an Academic All-state in tennis, a tremendous honor!

SHHS Girls Soccer: Tuesday night (10/6) our girls capped off a great season with a win against Wasatch HS that solidified the region championship for the team. The girls won by a score of 3-0 playing great offensively and defensively throughout the night under the lights of the football field to secure the win. Being as it was the last home game of the regular season, it was senior night as well, and I'm sure it will be a night that our seniors and the rest the team and our school will remember for a long time! Great job and congratulations to Coach Gillie, his staff, and the girls soccer team!

SHHS Debate: Congratulations to Mr. Doug Welton and his debate program. Our debate program is ranked in the top 7.5% of schools nationwide, and because of their earning of more than 200 degrees last year has achieved membership in the prestigious 200 Club of the National Speech and Debate Assiciation, a remarkable accomplishment!

SHHS Skyhawk(s) of the Month:  Our English department recently honored students that they identified as our outstanding students of the month for character, integrity, and academic accomplishment. Our students of the month for this month are Michelle Beal (nominated by Mrs. Muir), Parker Brook (nominated by Mr. Fillmore), Tayler Sparrow (nominated by Mrs. Smithey), Ryker Drake (nominated by Mr. Moody), Seydy Varela (nominated by Mrs. Gibb), and Nathan Lemon (nominated by Mrs. Larsen). On a related note, Mrs. Larsen was honored as the teacher of the month by the student council for her outstanding teaching.

SHHS DECA and FBLA: Our DECA and FBLA students did a tremendous job competing at the Herriman Invitational this week. We had several students place very high in their selected categories. Dylan Baxter placed 3rd in accounting; Wyatt Biesenbach and Hannah Wheelwright placed 1st in Buying and Merchandising; Wyatt Biesenbach placed 3rd in Apparel and Accessories; Spencer Crow placed 2nd in MOS Excel, 1st in MOS PowerPoint, and 1st in MOS Word; Sierra Draper placed 2nd in Job Interview. Way to go DECA and FBLA!

SHHS Captains attend Captain's Academy: Several SHHS students participated in the Nebo School District Captain's Academy where they learned about principles of good leadership and the importance of being a good captain. Our captain's were Brigham Hughes (representing football), Nathan Chestnut (representing boys cross country), Haley Johnston (representing girls cross country), Paige Simmons (representing girls soccer), Amanda Ith and Amanda Wilcox (representing girls tennis), Nate Millington (representing student council), Maddie Meuter (representing cheer), Jason Cheney (representing boys golf), and Callie Peterson (representing volleyball. We are proud of the way our captains represent our school so well.
