"If you don't know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else." --Yogi Berra

With the recent passing of Yogi Berra, the great New York Yankee, I was reminded  of some of his  classic quotes. Yogi Berra was well known for stating the obvious in a rather quirky yet profound way that was full of ironic wisdom, and when I read the quote above, I couldn't help but notice the obvious educational applications in this quirky gem.

How often do we wind up "someplace else"? I don't think any of our students who achieve below where they wanted to, academically, intentionally decided to under achieve; those who wind up in behavioral trouble, usually, don't intentionally start out with a master plan to cause trouble. They run into problems because they didn't make and follow a plan that would have helped them get to where they wanted or needed to go.

Let's help our students know where they're going, and if we can see they're not sure where they're going or supposed to go, let's help them figure it out because it's heartbreaking to see our students heading towards that "someplace else". I'm grateful it is my job to help our students figure out where they're going, and it's a real pleasure to work with you in this endeavor.

 Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS  Cross Country: The cross country team continues to have a great season.  This past weekend they competed at the Nebo Invitational hosted by Maple Mountain HS where the girls team took 7th and the boys took 8th place out of 25 schools.  They are competing at the Park City Invitational this afternoon (10/2) before turning their attention to the Region Championships that will take place on October 9.

SHHS Band: Our Band placed 3rd at the Nebo Tournament of Bands last Saturday (9/26) and treated our fans to their competition number last night (10/1) at the football game. Their performance was awesome! They next compete at Copper Hills HS tomorrow (10/3). Good luck band!

SHHS Student Council: Our SHHS student council artistically transformed our school into several well known locations from around the world as part of our homecoming festivities last week, and they provided our students with several fun activities throughout the week as well. We really appreciate all that our student council does for the students of SHHS.

SHHS Boys Football: The football team was engaged in another grinder last week playing Wasatch HS close into the 4th quarter where the Wasps eventually got the upper hand, but got back to their winning ways with a win against our neighbor to the west: Payson HS last night by a score of 28-3. Our seniors and their families were honored as part of the games festivities and it made for a special night; we appreciate the way our seniors have represented our school. The team next plays Thursday, 10/8 on the road against Westlake HS.

SHHS Girls Soccer: Sophie Carter was selected as the MaxPreps player of the week; she recieved a certificate and letter from the organization for her excellence on the pitch. The whole team received an award from the NSCAA for academic excellence for having a team GPA of 3.81, and this is the team's sixth award in a row for such excellence. They defeated Spanish Fork HS on Tuesday by a score of 2-0, and won a tough contest 3-2 against Springville HS last night (10/1). The team is currently second in region and looks to improve that spot as they take on region-leading Wasatch HS on Tuesday (10/6) night at 7:00 PM under the lights of the football field.

SHHS Volleyball:  The ladies had a good week last week with wins against Wasatch HS and Payson HS, before losing on the road at Uintah HS on Tuesday (9/28). The team bounced back, though, with a good win against Spanish Fork HS last night (10/1). The team currently sits at second place in region and looks to possibly improve that position as they serve it up against Springville HS, who currently sits in first in region, next Tuesday (10/6) night at 6:15 PM.

SHHS Boys Golf: The boys golf team concluded region play with a first place finish at their final match at Hobble Creek GC, and finished region play as the 2nd place team in region. Our team had four players make the all-region team as well: Brock Nielsen, Jayden Parkinson, Steven Barton, and Kaleb DeGraffenried.  In addition to our all-region players, Mason Bigler and Carson Hill will also represent our team at state on October 5 and 6 at the Soldier Hollow GC in Midway, Utah. Good luck at state gentlemen!
