As the thunderclouds rolled in yesterday at graduation, we all watched anxiously wondering what calamity the storm would bring with it. We probably all went through a number of worst-case scenarios in our minds; however, after about ten minutes we were relieved to see the sun fighting its way through the gloom to make for a glorious ceremony. And as I stood there, a little wet, and congratulated our seniors on their accomplishments, I couldn't help feeling just how fitting the scene was.

Like the sun fighting through the gloom of the storm, our seniors have battled through their share of gloom to get to that glorious finale of graduation. Whether it's been academic, social, or personal gloom, they've endured the storm and have shone through brilliantly! And isn't this so true to life. Clouds will come, we're going to get rained on a little bit (or a lot); however, the sun will come, and to quote the great George Harrison, "It's alright" and will be alright going forward; we just have to do our best to find our sun!

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Success: According to U.S. News and World Report, SHHS ranks 9th in the state of Utah for academic success (http://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/utah/districts/nebo-district/salem-hills-high-20224). Congratulations to our awesome teachers and phenomenal staff!

SHHS Scholarships: This year our students earned a total of $4,251,714.00 in scholarships which is up from last year's total of $2,367,928.00 for a difference of $1,883, 786.00. Way to go SHHS seniors and students!

SHHS Orchestra Students: Mat and Mauri Stokes, two of our seniors here at SHHS, were selected by the Utah Symphony to perform with their music mentors in an all-star performance of high school musicians at Abravanel Hall on May 19. Students who performed represented the best of Utah's youth orchestras. Congratulations to Mat and Mauri! They represented our school very well.

SHHS Musical Theater: Jessica Morgan, a junior here at SHHS, competed in Chicago last weekend in the National Musical Theater Competition. She placed 3rd in the competition. Congratulations to this talented student!

SHHS Track and Field: The Salem Hills HS Track teams wrapped up a wonderfully successful season last week at the state championships at BYU.  The boys and girls competed fiercely through the rain, hail, wind and cold and represented our school with Spirit, Heart, Honor and Success.  Both teams capped their seasons by finishing 3rd place overall.  Coach Thompson and his coaching staff would like to let everyone know how proud they are of each and every member of the team.  They fought and clawed for every inch, every second, and every point; he would like to let his athletes know how amazing they were to coach.

SHHS Baseball: The boys' baseball team came up just short of the state title by losing a closely contested game to region rival Spanish Fork HS by a score of 7-6 in the semi-final game of the winners' bracket of the 4A baseball state championship (Spanish Fork HS went on to win the championship). The team had a great season and competed with class and dignity throughout the entire season; with many players coming back next year, the future is extremely bright for the program. Congratulations to Coach Haney and this year's team!

SHHS Fairchild Challenge Team: The SHHS Fairchild Challenge team took 1st place in the 2015 Thanksgiving Point Fairchild Challenge event. As winners of the event our students earned $1000 dollars that will go towards supporting environmental programs and initiatives at our school. The following students were members of the team: Kyla Anderson, Audrey Barney, Nick Brain, Monika Cloward, Jason Cox, Sarah Deeb, Cheyanne Deeben, Taylor Gasser, Nathan Moser, Vethera Nixon, Josh Peck, Elizabeth Rash, Jesse Rowley, Sydney Shuler, Olivia Trent, and Lucas Walker.
