Last Saturday I represented our administrative team in a drift trike race. I'd never raced a drift trike before, so I took advice from Mr. Neves and our students as to how to best navigate the course that had been set up for us. As I raced through the course, everything went very smoothly, and I felt like I handled the race well, completely under control. Well, after all the administrator's race times were submitted, I was surprised to learn that my time was the slowest of the five administrator racers, and the words of Mario Andretti seemed to apply to me: "If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough." I needed to attack the course with more speed but was happy to cross the finish line with the drift trike and myself in one piece.

As our students navigate their educational courses,  sometimes they may need to speed up a little bit, and sometimes they may need to slow things down . Most importantly, they need to find their successful speed.  At SHHS we are committed to helping our students navigate their educational courses and find their successful speed. Like Mr. Neves and our students helped me navigate the drift trike course, we are a faculty and staff committed to helping our students navigate their high school experience. We encourage our students to speed up when necessary, and conversely, we provide warnings and caution when our students' courses or their speed is not conducive to their success. Most importantly, we encourage and help them to finish their race; I look forward to watching them finish!

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Hockey Representative: Jayson Rencher, a junior here at SHHS, was selected as a member of the All-Utah Hockey Team which represented our state in a national tournament held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania over spring break. Jayson was one of 20 players selected for this honor! Congratulations Jayson!

SHHS Drift Trike Competition: As mentioned previously, last Saturday (4/18) our students participated in the Nebo Trikefest Competition at Spanish Fork HS. Students from the district high schools raced drift trikes that they had built in their welding classes. SHHS was very well represented in the competition categories. John Hill placed 1st with the fastest time on the track, Connor Peterson placed 2nd, and Wyatt Heaton finished in 3rd. Victor Tracy won the Non-motorized Freestyle Competition, and Skylar Simpson won for Best Design. The welding and workmanship of our students was remarkable. Really the only disappointment of the day was the administrator racer representing our school, me, who came in 5th out of five racers.

SHHS Choirs: Last week on April 22, three of our Salem Hills HS Choirs participated in the Region VIII Large Choir Festival at Timpview HS.  All three choirs: Concert Choir, Serendipity, and Men's Camerata  earned straight superior ratings and have been invited to perform at the State Choral Festival at the University of Utah on May 16. Congratulations to our awesome choirs!

SHHS Wrestling: SHHS senior Jacob Armstrong finished in 2nd place at Nationals which were held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on April 3. He lost to a wrestler from Texas in an incredibly competitive match, 5-1. Congratulations Jacob for doing so well at Nationals!

SHHS Girls' Golf: Last week the ladies competed at Spanish Oaks GC and hosted a match at the Gladstan GC. Girls who competed last week included Sariah Lee, Brooke Terry, Dacia Johnson, and Mallory Hanks (also on the team: Jenna Dey). Each week the ladies are improving and competing well. They next play on Tuesday (4/28) at Hobble Creek GC.

SHHS Tennis: The tennis team played great in their tournament over the weekend (4/24 & 4/25) which was hosted here and at SFHS. They finished in 2nd behind Desert Hills HS (state champions last year). They next travel to Timpview HS for a match on Tuesday (4/28) at 3:30 PM.

SHHS Track and Field: The Salem Hills Track Team competed at American Fork High School last Saturday (4/18) competing against 11 of the best schools in Utah, mostly 5A schools.  The Lady Skyhawks continued their undefeated season with a big win outscoring the 2nd place team by 50 points!  The men finished in 2nd place losing only to Orem.  Great job Skyhawks!

Congratulations to Devin Minson for breaking his own school record in the 300 Meter Hurdles, Coulson Boggess for breaking his own school record in the 100 Meters, Porter Gustin for reclaiming the school Shot Put record, and Alison Pray for breaking the 3200 Meters school record!  Way to go Skyhawks!

SHHS Baseball: Our SHHS baseball team had a good week against Olympus HS winning both their games against the Titans. This week they face Maple Mountain HS in two pivotal games with region title implications. They play at MMHS on Tuesday (4/28) and here at SHHS on Thursday (4/30). Both games begin at 3:30 PM. Come out and cheer on the baseball team as they compete for the region title.

SHHS Boys' Soccer: The boys played a very hard-fought match against Maple Mountain HS on Thursday evening (4/23) playing the match into triple overtime where Maple Mountain HS eked out  a 1-0 victory. The team competed with class and conducted themselves very well on the pitch. They next play at Spainish Fork HS on Tuesday (4/28).

SHHS Softball: Our lady Skyhawks played well against Timpview HS on Thursday bouncing back for a nice win after losing on Tuesday to the Red Devils. The ladies next play at Maple Mountain HS on Thursday (4/30). Come support the team as they look to play into playoff contention.

Skyhawk Happenings:

  • On Tuesday, April 28, at 10:00 AM in the auditorium, all students who are taking an AP test will need to attend an AP testing meeting. The counselors will present information relating to taking the AP tests, and students will need to bring a pencil and something to write on.
  • Beginning on May 4 and continuing through May 22, the testing window is open for the SAGE Test. In that time frame, our sophomores and juniors will be doing SAGE testing in their science, English, and math classes. Encourage them to do their best!
  • The National Honor Society is doing a collection for the Nebo Pantry.  The Nebo Pantry is a great resource for students in our district to get resources for life, and it is housed behind Landmark School in Spanish Fork and benefits all students in Nebo.  NHS students have developed a bracket system to pit the B4 class periods against each other to see who can collect the most.  The winning teachers from each stage of the bracket may or may not be asked to do humiliating and (or) embarrassing things for winning which students will be allowed to witness; ergo, students should have plenty of incentive to participate.
  • The PTSA Spring Book Fair will be in the auditorium common area and run from Monday, April 27 to Thursday, April 30. Times of availability will be from 7:00 AM to 2:45 PM. Everything in stock is buy-one-get-one free!
  • PTSA scholarship applications are available in the counseling office and at the website:  shhsptsa.com/scholarship.aspx   Applications are due to the counseling office by May 1. You must be a senior and a paid member of PTSA in order to apply.
  • UVU is offering (for free) an online, self-paced math refresher course this summer. The intended audience is for juniors and seniors who are looking to improve their math ACT scores or math Accuplacer scores for better math class options; the course is specifically designed with ACT and Accuplacer in mind. It has yielded high results from students who have completed the course before. The course is offered through Canvas and instructor support from UVU is available throughout the course. The following link provides information about the course:  http://www.uvu.edu/uc/students/mooc.html and the dates of the course are June 8-July 27.
  • Football spring workouts will be on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings starting at 5:30 PM in the SHHS weight room.
  • All junior boys with the zip code of 84651 and 84660 interested in government, political science and/or how our system of government and judicial system works should stop by the counseling office and pick up a Boys State application.  Boys State is scheduled for June 8 through June 12, 2015  at Weber State University in Ogden.  Boys will receive three hours of university credit  upon completion of Boys State.  Credits are generally transferable to any state funded university.  Those participating will need to provide their own transportation and $100.00.  The rest of the registration fee will be paid by the American Legion. Deadlines for applications are April 15 for 84660 zip codes and May 5 for 84651 zip codes.
  • The counseling department would like to know about scholarships awarded to any SHHS student, even if the scholarship is not accepted. We would like to recognize all those who have been offered scholarships at our awards assembly at the end of the year.
  • Tabatha's Way is a local charitable organization that will be placing a clothing collection bin in our parking lot. According to statistics provided by Tabitha's Way, every 600 lbs. of clothing they collect can be used to generate the resources necessary to feeds a needful family of four for a week. So look for the Tabatha's Way clothing bin if you wish to donate; for more information you can go to their website at  www.tabithasway.org
  • Detention will be held before school, during lunch, and after school in room C207 with Ms. Houghton and before school with Mr. Schwenke (weight room).
