SHHS Weekly Newsletter 1

In line with our annual tradition, the student council at Salem Hills High School chose David Correy and Aloe Black's song "The World is Ours" as this year's theme song. In the song a verse reads, "You can stand on my shoulders and raise up your arms; when we all come together we light up the dark." The chorus of the song then emphasizes how  "...the world is ours." It's a great song, and I highly encourage listening to it if you haven't had a chance to hear it yet. Our student council chose the perfect song because it captures the essence of what we are striving to accomplish here at our school. We want to lift each other up and help one another realize that the world is ours. Our little piece of the world that Salem Hills High School serves can be what we make of it, and though we face trials, adversity, and heartache like all communities do, it is my great privilege and honor to associate with the caliber of students, faculty, parents, and community that we have here at SHHS, where I see, daily, us lifting one another up and letting others stand on our shoulders.

Again this year we are going to strive to follow the admonition of celebrated psychologist and author Shawn Achor and strive to be "Positive in the Present". To be "Positive in the Present" as a school, we are going to identify, daily, three things for which we are grateful; we are also going to write about something positive that we've been involved with each day; additionally, we are going to commit to daily exercise and meditation; and we are going to look for opportunities to provide/perform random acts of kindness for those we interact with everyday. By doing these things, we believe we can improve our outlook on learning and social interaction for ourselves, our peers, our school, and our school community. We encourage you again this year to join us in living "Positive in the Present."

Skyhawk Highlights:

Mr. Peery Surprised at SHHS Welcome Back Assembly: Our first assembly of the year was full of positive energy, and the energy improved even more when KSL radio personality Amanda Dixon arrived on the scene to surprise Mr. Peery with the first KSL Teacher Feature award of the year. Mr. Peery was honored as the first principal to win the award for continuing to build and strengthen a culture of caring and acceptance for all at SHHS. Congratulations Mr. Peery!

SHHS Students Council: Our student council under the direction of Coach Haney and Coach Gillie have been awesome! The choreography of this year's SHHS theme song, the opening assembly, and the various activities they've made available to our students have been some of the best we've ever seen. They are really doing a great job helping all our students feel like they are an integral part of our SHHS family!

SHHS Girls' Soccer: The girls' soccer team is off to their best start in school history having only lost one game to date at Maple Mountain HS (9/1). Senior Mariah Sainsbury was honored as the Deseret News Mountainstar Healthcare Star of the Week for her performance against Mountain View and Westlake High Schools where she scored 7 goals and assisted 2 others. Congratulations Mariah. The team's overall record is 7-1; the Lady Skyhawks next play at home against Springville HS on Tuesday (9/8).  Come and support the team as they compete in region play with their fast paced offence that is averaging 6 goals a game!

SHHS Girls' Tennis: The ladies performed well in St. George last weekend where they battled the heat as well as the competition. They finished 8th overall at the tournament; however, Coach Tolbert was pleased with the way the girls performed and competed against very good teams. They next play tuesday (9/8) here against Spanish Fork HS.

SHHS Cheer: The cheer team has done a tremendous job setting the tone for enthusiasm and spirit at SHHS. Their hard work and commitment to their performances have set the tone for spirit, heart, honor,  and success again this year. Our student body feeds off of their enthusiasm  and support for our school and teams. Their contributions to the enthusiastic climate at our football and volleyball games this year has been awesome!

SHHS Volleyball: Our volleyball team is off to a 3-0 start winning matches against Westlake HS, Orem HS, and region opponent Uintah HS. The team has shown resiliency by coming back from two games down to defeat Orem HS three games to two and winning in closely contested matches against Westlake and Uintah. Next up for the team will be a match against region rival Spanish Fork HS on Tuesday (9/8) here at SHHS.

SHHS Lashays: The drill team has entertained us early this year with multiple performances of their "Nerd Dance" routine. The Lashays have put a lot of time into perfecting the precision of their performances and, like the cheer team, have done a tremendous job setting the tone for enthusiasm and spirit here at SHHS!

SHHS Boys' Football: The football team is 1-1 after  two weeks of play. They opened the season by defeating Delta HS 47-14. They next traveled to Stansbury HS where they lost in a close game by a score of 28-20. The team next plays this Friday here at SHHS at 7:00 PM, so come and support our Skyhawks as they face Juab HS!

SHHS Boys' Golf: The Boys' Golf team is off to its best start in school history. They currently sit in second place in Region 8. They next host a match at Gladstan Golf Course on  September 9.

We look forward to reporting on all the students, classes, organizations, and clubs who represent our school so well throughout the year.
