SHHS Weekly Newsletter 18

"I've been booed off the field, and I've been carried off the field by people cheering me. So I've seen both ends of it, and I can tell you the bad side of it gets a lot more attention than the good side does, but the good side is pretty darned good when it's on your side." -- Tom Glavine

It's been a pleasure associating with our students, faculty, staff,  parents, and fans at our various SHHS sporting events and activities. I admire the way our educational community conducts itself with the class and sportsmanship that it does. We do a great job, as it states in our Skyhawk Code of Conduct, "pursuing victory with honor." Our students are enthusiastic and supportive of their competing and participating peers and do a great job creating an atmosphere full of that "good side" that hall-of-fame pitcher Tom Glavine was talking about, and I'm proud to be a part of that.

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Welding: On Saturday, January 24, our school hosted the region welding competition, and SHHS senior Hayden Boardman took 1st place in the individual competition. Hayden was one of four members on the SHHS welding team; other team members included Kien Marvin, Coulter Johnson, and Sam Evans. Though they didn't win the team competition, they produced quality welds that demonstrated the skills they've developed here as students. Good job guys, and congratulations Hayden!

SHHS Wrestling: Our SHHS wrestling team took 7th place out of 36 teams who competed in the Pineview tournament last weekend. Jacob Armstrong took 1st place in his weight division and was selected the "Outstanding Wrestler" of the tournament. Jaxon VanTassel and Jaxon Bowden each finished in 2nd place for their respective divisions; Bryton Shepherd and Kyle Larsen finished in 3rd; and rounding out the top finishers from the school were Brennen Gerratt and Brigham Hughes who each took their weight divisions 7th spot. The team will next compete in divisional competition which will be held at Roy HS on February 4 and 5.

SHHS Skyhawks (Students) of the Month: This month it was the business and marketing/family and consumer sciences departments' turn to select students who embody exceptional student conduct and character as Skyhawks (students) of the Month, and this month's winners include Hayden Henrie nominated by Mrs. Reynaud, Dairadee Reynolds nominated by Mrs. Johnson, Cooper Smith nominated by Mr. Clark, Karly Neves nominated by Ms. Cox, Challis Morgenson nominated by Mrs. Hansen, and Quinton MacCabe nominated by the student council. Congratulations to these students for representing our school so well and being the leaders they are!

SHHS FCCLA Competition: On Tuesday (1/27) twenty-five members of the FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) Chapter competed at the Region Convention in 14 different STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Events.  All 25 members qualified to attend the State FCCLA Competition in March.  Each participant was awarded either a Gold, Silver, or Bronze Ribbon reflecting the scores given by a set of judges.  Overall medal awards for our members included 5 Gold Medals, 10 Silver Medals, and 10 Bronze Medals.  Congratulations to the gold medal winners: Danna Wilson, Kelcee Davis, and McKennah Scott in the Interpersonal Communications Event and Ashley Taylor and Olivia Trent in the Sport Nutrition Event.

SHHS Girls' Basketball: The girls had an outstanding victory against Timpview HS last Friday night at Timpview HS; the win places the team in a tie for 1st in region. They followed that win up with a solid 67-42 point win over Provo HS this week (1/27). The team is really playing well and positioning themselves for a favorable seeding in the state tournament. They will next play at Spanish Fork HS on Friday night (1/30).

SHHS Boys' Basketball: The boys' basketball team played in an "old fashioned barn burner" against Provo HS on Tuesday night. The game was tightly contested the whole night, and a late three-point shot by Jeff DeGraffenreid tied the game at 64-64. Provo, however, made a three-point shot of their own to clinch the win at 67-64. National Champion Coach Urban Meyer was in attendance to watch Porter Gustin play, and Porter played very well scoring 28 points. Jeff DeGraffenreid also played great adding 24 points. Next up for our Skyhawks will be Spanish Fork HS at their school on Friday night (1/30).
