"I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're doing something."

-- Neil Gaiman

I came across this quote from Neil Gaiman, the popular author, and I thought it was very apropos for where we are at as a school community at Salem Hills High School. One of the great challenges we face in education is getting caught up in the status quo and doing things the way they have always been done. We are afraid, at times, to veer from what we are comfortable with because we are afraid to make mistakes. We let the possibility of making mistakes almost cripple us at times. Education by its very nature, however, cannot follow the status quo. It must grow and adapt to address the needs of our growing and adapting world. So, as we embrace the growth and adaptations that come inevitably in education, I would admonish us to follow the charge given in the previous quote, that we be willing to push ourselves and make learning mistakes, and by so doing, we will grow and adapt and be better for it.
