With so many positive things to report on here at SHHS and the end-of-year announcements that need to be given, let's get right to the good stuff!

Skyhawk Highlights:

SHHS Girls' Golf: This season we had a historic first for SHHS and our girls' golf program. Brooke Terry, a junior at SHHS, placed 8th in Region VIII and qualified for state competition which hadn't been done before in our high school's history. At the state tournament, she  played very well shooting a 93 and scoring a 69 in Stableford Scoring which is right where her region competition average has been all year. Congratulations to Brooke on her great season, and we look forward to her stellar play on the course again next year!

SHHS Art Show: Our SHHS students put their artistic talents on full display recently at the annual SHHS Art Show. There were six categories with multiple winners from each category. The following students were winners in their respective categories for their submitted entries: For Painting: Kiner Kwok - 1st - "Was", Hannah Wheelwright - 2nd - "Alexander the Great", Heidi Roberts -  3rd - "Indigo", and Haley Johnston - Honorable Mention - "Shattered". For Drawing: Abigail Hawkins - 1st - "Affection", Audrey Miller - 2nd - "Untitled 2", Aspen Davis - 3rd - "Marilyn Monroe", and Samantha Anderson - Honorable Mention - "Maleficent". For 3D: Rahjauna Jean - 1st - "Reality is the Nightmare", Tori Cochrane - 2nd - "Stretched Out", Landon Finch - 3rd - "Genie Lamp", and Jordan Kodel - Honorable Mention - "Beauty and Death" and Erica Gebert - Honorable Mention - "Pod". For Photography: Sarah Deeb - 1st - "I'm Washing You", Bailee Williams - 2nd - "Sensation", Mary Parr - 3rd - "My Love Inside", and Bethany White - Honorable Mention - "Sunshine". For Student Choice Award: Haley Johnston - 1st - "Shattered", Colin Walker - 2nd - "Monster Mulies", Hannah Wheelwright - 3rd - "Hitler", and Kiner Kwok - Honorable Mention - "Over the Rainbow". For Teacher Choice Award: Kiner Kwok "Doug Wants You for Debate". Congratulations to all these talented artists, and thanks to Ms. Shuler and Ms. Allred for their instruction and mentoring!

SHHS Tennis: The SHHS Varsity Tennis team wrapped up their region tournament competition on Tuesday, May 10.  5 of the 7 players on the varsity team competed in the tournament. Dallin McCarthy and Riley Lewis won the #2 doubles championship; Kyle Alldridge took 2nd in the #2 singles division; Jayden Parkinson claimed 2nd in the #3 singles division, and Tanner Nichols placed 4th in the #1 singles division, and Levi Ward and Ethan Condie narrowly missed qualifying for state competition by taking 5th in the #1 doubles division.

Our SHHS JV Tennis team played great as well this year. They won the region JV tournament which was held at Springville HS on April 29. Drew Meservy placed 1st in #1 singles; McKay Asay placed 1st in #2 singles; and Jacob Anderson placed 1st in #3 singles. Jesse Clark and Jason Cheney placed 2nd in #1 doubles; Tyler Riche and Cory Collins placed 1st in #3 doubles; and Kaiden Shelley and Nick Jefferey placed 1st in #5 doubles. Other players that contributed to the team win included Steele Rapier, Michael Winder, Addison Hicks, Tristan Smith, Mason Lindstrom, and Jonathan Tullis. The JV team went undefeated this year and look forward to continuing their winning ways next year. Congratulations to our talented tennis players and varsity and JV teams. Good luck at state!

SHHS ProStart: Congratulations to our ProStart team: Garen Lamb, Lauren Parker, Danielle Pugh, Jonny Chandler, and Morgan Briggs. They performed exceptionally well at their region competition and received many positive remarks for their Alaskan-themed food presentation. They designed how to plate  their food and prepare it in under an hour using just two burners. Mrs. Moffat was very proud of how they represented themselves and SHHS in the region competition.

SHHS Track and Field: Congratulations to Coach Thompson and the SHHS Boys and Girls Track and Field Teams. Both teams are region VIII champions this year! Coach Thompson wanted to particularly thank his seniors for helping to establish such a positive culture and tradition of success. The teams will next compete in the state championships this Friday and Saturday at BYU. We'd like to recognize the teams for their great seasons and  wish them the best at state!

SHHS Spring Academic All-State Winners: We had a number of students receive academic all-state honors for their efforts in the classroom and on their fields, tracks, and courts of competition. This year's SHHS spring sport academic all-state recipients are Sam Callister (Baseball), Landon Loss (Soccer), Mason Baxter and Jayson Rencher (Boys' Track and Field), and Danielle Pugh, Mariah Sainsbury, and Paige Simmons (Girls' Track and Field). Congratulations to these exemplary students!

SHHS Baseball: Our SHHS Baseball Team finished region play as the Region VIII Champions and ranked number 1 in the state for 4A! They won their first game of the state playoff beating Skyline HS 7-4. They next play at home versus Corner Canyon HS. Come and support this talented team and Coach Haney and his staff as they continue their run in the tournament!

SHHS Pursuing Victory with Honor Recipients: At our recent Pursuing Victory with Honor Assembly, the following students were recognized by their coaches for embodying what it means to compete and pursue victory without compromising their integrity through the process: Hannah Wallentine - Choir, Bethany Davis - Debate, Chadwin Wright - Debate, Samuel Lofthouse - Orchestra, Dallin McCarthy - Tennis, Clayton Vanfleet - Soccer, Brooke Terry - Girls' Golf, Wes Stone - Track, Kaylie Adams - Track, Jacie Rees - Softball, Mason Bigler - Baseball, and Sophie McAllister - Cheer. We would like to thank these students for representing SHHS so well.

SHHS Choir: Our Salem Hills Concert Choir and Men's Camerata participated in the State Choral Festival at the University of Utah last Saturday (5/14).  Both choirs gave incredible performances and earned straight superior ratings from the adjudicators; and the adjudicators had extremely complementary things to say about their performances. Congratulations to Mr. Bills and our choirs for their excellent performance at the state festival.

SHHS Hockey Standout: Jayson Rencher, a senior here at SHHS, recently had the opportunity to play for Team Utah, a hockey team made up of high school aged kids from around the state. Jayson made the team through a tryout and traveled with the team to Pittsburgh to compete in a national tournament; the purpose of the tournament was for players to be exposed to recruiters for colleges, juniors, and minor league teams as well as see some of the sights of a hockey town. Jayson played well for the team scoring multiple goals, and though they weren't as successful as they would have liked to have been, they competed well. Jayson was also able to talk to scouts about his prospects of playing hockey in the future. For now, though, Jayson plans on playing for UVU's club team and possibly playing juniors if he gets the chance. Congratulations Jayson on the honor of playing for our state hockey team!
