"Learning is not a spectator sport." --D. Blocher

It's true that we can learn many things from the observations we make in life; however, it's the experiences that we have that truly shape us as individuals. C.S. Lewis, the famous author, talked about how experience can be a "brutal teacher" at times but how we authentically learn from our life's experiences. Our hope at Salem Hills High School is that our students are experiencing their learning; we hope that they are individually engaged in their various classroom experiences because, to reiterate the previous quote, "Learning is not a spectator sport." Let's be as involved as we can in this great SHHS learning experience!

Our Awesome PTSA would also like you to be aware of upcoming events they have planned and of which they would like you to be aware. Below is a copy of their most recent newsletter:

                                                               SHHS PTSA News

Thank you to all those who helped with our donation drive. We raised over $1000 that will go towards Respect Week, Teacher Appreciation, Reflections, Scholarships, helping the school purchase needed items and more. Mrs. Larsen’s B5 class returned all of their envelopes and were given a donut party.

We would like to thank Nikki Johnson, Holly Thurgood, Jamie Johnson, Lucia Newman and Julie Christensen who helped supply the teacher’s SEP dinners last month.

The Munchie Monday table has been looking so delicious this year with tasty treats like chips and salsa, brownies, cookies and fruit pizza just to name a few treats the teachers have been given as one of our ways to show the faculty at Salem Hills how much we appreciate what they do daily in their classrooms. We'd like to thank Necia Albrecht, Heather Hansbrow, Linda Jones, Laurine Jack, Angela Rogers, Ronda Slater and Jileen Meservy who have helped with treats this quarter. We still have 2 slots open to help with if you'd like to be part of this simple way of saying thanks before this school year ends.  Just go to and look for SHHS Munchie Mondays. :)

The PTSA Battle of the Bands competition will be held at Maple Mountain High School on March 17th.  Entry packets are in the front office and they are due on March 11th.  Get your band together now!

Our Respect Week coming up March 21st - 25th. Monday the 21st is our "Respect For Family" ice cream social night at 5:30. Parents, teachers, and families are invited.  On Tuesday the 22nd Respect Week positive messages will be posted all over the school and bracelets will be handed out in exchange for a high five, hand shake or smile to remind kids to respect themselves. Police, Fire Fighters and local government officials will be at our school handing out popcorn for “respect your community” day Wednesday. On Thursday there will be lip sync battles going on to remind us to respect others. A special emcee has been requested. Finally, Friday we will be making a school-wide lip dub that all the students will participate in to promote respect for school. See last year's Lip Dub at  Information regarding the Lip Dub:

It's time to get ready for our 2016 SHHS Lip Dub!!  We are going to be filming it the morning of Thursday, March 24th as part of our PTSA Respect Week.  I have posted the route map, route by list of groups, song compilation and lyrics at  for you to download.  We have compiled the school songs for the previous 2 years and this year's song, so all of the seniors should know the lyrics and dances which should be a lot of fun.  In fact, when choosing 2 or 3 lip dub leaders from each group, you may want to choose seniors, and encourage them to lip-sync along as it looks better.  Our route is similar to last year, except we will be starting at the doors by the wrestling room and when we go outside the front of the school we will keep going past the main entrance to the south entrance doors (by the cafeteria) and then come back down the main hallway and then into the back entrance of the gym down the A hall.  Jed Hazel will be filming again and will be moving backwards so that the students will walk towards him.  Have your students head to the main gym (though the north entrance) after they are out of the view of the camera.

If you are a teacher who is over a club, sport, fine arts group, or other organization, please look at the map and let your students know where to go.  The quicker we can get everyone in place the better.  We will just do a one-time filming (instead of doing a practice run like we did last time).  Tell students, if they don't know where to go, just find some empty space in the main hall and fill it.  We would like everyone to wear their uniforms or club shirts or SHHS school colors that day to represent your group.  Also, your group can make signs, use props, or whatever to represent your group.  Our last lip dub has been viewed over 5,000 times!  Let's make this one a special memory our students, teachers, and community can watch over and over.  Also, we want TEACHERS to be in the video too!  Please join the students in showing your school spirit!  This is to be a unifying activity and we want all involved.

If you have any questions, or if you see a group I might have missed, please let me know. (  Thank you all for your participation.

We are also have Teacher Appreciation Week March 28th-April 1st, another Zupas night April 12th and our BOGO Book Fair April 25th-29th.

If you would like to help with any of these activities please contact our PTSA President, Angela Rogers at

Angela is also looking for help on next year's PTSA Board. Why join PTSA or become a member of the Board??? It benefits your child to see you at the school participating in activities, there is no better way to stay connected to school happenings, it allows you to speak up about things that are important to you and your child, you will tap into a network of parents and educators that are willing to help you, and finally, you will watch yourself grow as you gain valuable experiences and share your skills and hobbies for a good cause.

We invite anyone interested to join us at our next Board meeting that will be pushed back to April 14th because of Spring Break.
